English Language Program for Non-Degree Student Admission

International students, educators, and employers who want to gain English language skills and do not plan to pursue a Miami University degree program, may enroll in our English Language Program (ELP) for non-degree students.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the English Language Program, Non-degree applicants must submit an ELP non-degree application and:

  • Be at least 18 years old before the first day of their enrollment term.
  • Provide proof of graduation from a secondary school or transcripts for completed coursework from a university.
  • Provide a copy of a current, valid passport or copy of a national ID
  • Provide proof of financial resources to meet educational and living expenses during your studies at Miami University.

English Proficiency Required to Enroll

To participate in the ELP as a non-degree student, applicants should have at least a high beginning level of English, which means you are able to speak in short conversations, understand short conversations and audio on familiar topics, understand short readings of several paragraphs, and write several connected sentences on common topics. This is the equivalent of CEFR level A2.

Admission to the English Language Program Non-Degree is available for summer, fall, and spring terms.

Additional Admission and Enrollment Information

Academic Records

At the time of application, students must provide a copy of their most recent academic records indicating a high beginning level of English equivalent to CERF level A2. Official copies will be required prior to enrollment.

U.S. Visa Holders

In addition to a copy of a passport or national ID card, all international applicants who are visa holders in the U.S. must also provide a copy of their current visa or immigration status.

Financial Support Documentation

All international applicants who require 1-20 or DS-2019 documents (F-1 or J-1 Visa) to attend Miami University’s English Language Program are required to provide documentation of financial support adequate to cover all educational and living expenses.

Applicants must upload supporting financial verification documents via their Applicant Status Page. Financial verification documents include bank statements dated not more than one year prior to your intended date of entry. Tax returns and letters of employment are not acceptable.

After Applying

After you apply, you will receive an email from Miami containing a link to your personalized Applicant Status Page, which you will use to monitor your application checklist and confirm that Miami has received all required materials. When your admission decision is released, check your status page for your decision and next steps.

Admitted Student Information

  • Admitted students must confirm their enrollment via their Applicant Status Page and pay their confirmation deposit before Miami will issue I-20 documents. The confirmation deposit is $425 for students who will live on campus and $95 for students who will live off campus.
  • ELP students must live on campus in Oxford, Ohio, unless they qualify for a housing exemption.
