English Language Program Admission
Conditional Admission for Degree-Seeking Students
International students who do not meet minimum English language proficiency requirements for direct admission to our Oxford campus may be conditionally admitted through the Miami University English Language Program (ELP).
ELP students enjoy all the benefits of Miami University student life on campus, with full access to facilities, services, and activities – and ample opportunities to get involved. Dedicated academic advising and support guide students through an educational plan to improve English proficiency while staying on track to achieve their academic and career goals.
The program has four levels. Incoming students’ English proficiency is assessed during on-campus orientation to confirm their most-appropriate level before the start of their first semester.
Students progress through ELP until they reach Level 4, at which time they begin taking credit-bearing coursework. After completing Level 4, they are fully admitted to a degree program. Students must successfully complete each level’s requirements to progress, and most students complete one level per semester.
Exam | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4 |
---|---|---|---|---|
TOEFL | 17 | 29 | 48 | 72 |
IELTS | 4 | 4.5 | 5 | 6 |
DUOLINGO | 30 | 60 | 80 | 100 |
Please note that actual placement may vary based on the results of English placement testing conducted during orientation.
