2024 Astronaut Scholars
Zachary Abrahms (Biology, Premedical Studies) and Cecelia Meinking (Biochemistry, Music) have been announced as Miami's 2024 Astronaut Scholars. Zachary's faculty mentor is J. Andrew Jones (Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering), and Cecelia's is Kevin Yehl (Chemistry and Biochemistry).

- Mollie Duffy (Public Administration) was selected as one of 20 students nationwide to serve as a Key into Public Service Scholar by the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
- Jack Fazio (Microbiology; Premedical Studies), a former student trustee, became an advocate for student mental health and served on last year's institutional mental health taskforce.
- Lucy Gardner (M.S. Graduate Student, Biology) wrote an opinion column called "You Are the Planet's Most Important Influencer" for timesunion.com.
- Jules Jefferson '24 (Biochemistry; Environmental Science co-major) was honored with the 2024 Ken and Joan Frankel Outstanding Premedical Student of the Year Award.
- Evelyn Morrison (Public Administration; Sustainability co-major) created the Hometown Talent Initiative, which helps to combat is “brain drain,”
- Mary Nelson (Political Science) received the 2024 Barbara Bolding-Jim Grew Scholarship from the USA Water Ski & Wake Sports Foundation.
- Jack Schmelzinger '24 (Journalism; Economics), former sports editor for The Miami Student, is a prolific new sports writer at the Cincinnati Enquirer, producing more than 155K page views (36K of them subscriber-only) and 86 subscription orders on 46 stories since starting in May.
- Sean Scott '24 (Journalism; Urban and Regional Planning) is an award-winning journalist and the founding editor of The Oxford Free Press, created in collaboration with board members Richard Campbell (emeritus journalism professor), Jim Rubenstein (emeritus geography professor), and John Skillings (former CAS dean).
- Peren Tiemann '24 (Public Administration) pursues public service and leadership focused on gun violence prevention and LGBTQIA+ activism.
- Lily Wahl (English Literature; Spanish), Taylor Stumbaugh (Journalism; Media and Communication), Jack Schmelzinger (Journalism; Economics), and Sean Scott (Journalism; Geographic Info Science certificate), all from The Miami Student, won the National 2023 Mark of Excellence awards by the Society of Professional Journalists this past May.
