Erin Panchula, on Why Miami?

Why Miami?

They have a great program for undergraduate research which is something grad schools really look for.

How did you choose your major?

I took both chemistry and biochemistry in high school and loved both of them equally, especially looking at the chemical reactions that occur in biological systems and genetics which ultimately led me to pick biochemistry as my major.

Key Moment at Miami

Taking genetics at Miami was really great because I got to learn more about a topic that I was considering as a potential career and while learning about genetics we talked about some other topics that also interested me and showed me that there are many topics out there that I would like to study and thus it encouraged me to explore other interests and not limit myself in future career goals.

Favorite Miami Memory

Becoming involved in research at Miami has been really great as it has allowed me to put into use the material I have been learning in my classes, and everyone in the lab is great at helping when I don't know what I am doing to start. The equestrian team at Miami has also been amazing as it has helped me create so many friendships with people who share a similar interest.

What are your career goals?

After Miami I am hoping to go to graduate school and eventually into research either with genetics or developing pharmaceutics.
