Anna Gribbell '27, on Why Miami?

Why Miami?

I absolutely fell in love with the community and sense of belonging here, as well as the archaeology lab room when I toured for Make It Miami.

How did you choose your major?

I went in thinking I wanted to do Biology with a focus on Primates like Jane Goodall, but when I toured the Anthropology major for Make It Miami, I fell in love. I accepted my spot at Miami and changed my major to Anthropology that same day.

Key Moment at Miami

I had so much fun in London, England for the Archives & Artifacts study abroad in January, 2025. I got to hold some of Sir Hans Sloane's original journals detailing the collections he would eventually donate to start the British Museum and it just proved to me that archival work is what I want to do one day. I'm also in Squad, which is what we call our archaeology collections management. I get to work hands-on with our artifacts both in and out of class, and it's so rewarding.

Another Miami Moment

As part of my Archaeology minor, I got to literally dig on campus! My team found some really cool ceramics and another team found the foundations of a building (which I'm definitely not jealous of... okay maybe I'm just a little jealous). It was such a cool class and I'm really lucky to get this kind of hands on work while still being on campus.

Leadership in Action

I'm in the Honors College and I'm also heavily involved with the Anthropology Department. Outside of Squad, I'm also a student worker in the Anthropology office as well as the social media manager for Primatology Club.

Advice to Prospective Students

Absolutely take advantage of the opportunities Miami gives you. Join that club! Take that class! Study abroad! I've learned so much about myself and grown as a person just because I signed up to do things that I thought might be interesting. I'm a model for Pixel Magazine, which I would have never imagined doing back in high school. I've added both of my minors (Museums & Society and Archaeology) because I fell in love with the classes I took. Don't be afraid to try new things and discover parts of yourself you didn't know about before.

What are your career goals?

I plan to get a masters degree in Library Sciences and go on to work in preservation and archives, so future generations have the same access to our artifacts as we do today.
