Why Miami?
Miami was the perfect balance of a large school social scene and small and deeply interdisciplinary academic program. I felt like Miami put an emphasis on undergraduates, and provided the most opportunities for my academic growth.
How did you choose your major?
I originally came in as just a Biology major, but I realized very quickly that I wanted to do more with my time at Miami. I was reminded of my interest in physics when helping to tutor my peers in the subject and looking for undergraduate research opportunities. I found that the Liberal Arts style education allowed me to choose other academic areas of interest, while still getting a very deep education in my selected majors, which was perfect for me and my multiple academic interests.
Key Moment at Miami
In Dr. Vishwanath's OSIM lab, I've found a love for experimental learning. You'll be hard-pressed to find a course on "tissue spectroscopy," but its applications are vast globally (for instance, pulse oximeters use concepts of tissue spectroscopy). In a lot of senses these experimental learning opportunities to find new areas of interests that aren't really ever talked about, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around you.
Another Miami Moment
I am both a member of the DEANs STEMM Scholar Program, and a member of the Miami Honors College, and those programs have allowed me vast opportunities to grow and given me advantages that no other institution could've offered me. I also find myself tutoring many of my premedical peers in Physics, which has deepened my love for the subject and for teaching in general.
Advice to Prospective Students
There are plenty of ways for you to get involved on campus in social life and academic areas at Miami that cannot be found anywhere else. When weighing the college decision, don't forget those opportunities and their ability to develop the soft skills that aren't available anywhere else but Oxford.
What are your career goals?
In the future, I plan on applying to (and hopefully be accepted into) a combined PhD/MD program, where I hope to enter the medical field as an interventional cardiologist, and in my retirement, teach and conduct research in the field of biophysics and biomedical engineering at a university or work in the U.S. government in healthcare policy sectors.
