Why Miami?
The first part of Miami that I fell in love with was our beautiful campus that, in my opinion, is beautiful any time of year, no matter the weather. I was then drawn in by how much our professors care about students. I talked to Dr. Hay-Rollins for almost two hours at Make It Miami back in winter of 2024, and she is now my research advisor and has connected me to programs I never thought would be possible! I choose to stay at Miami every day because of the amazing people I have met here and the friends that I will have forever!
How did you choose your major?
I knew I wanted to go into medicine, but I also knew that I loved the humanities. Biology gives me a great foundation for the knowledge I need to become physician, but I chose to take on an anthropology major because I knew I wanted to work with people and better understand them. I truly believe now that my anthropology coursework has prepared me more to work with patients than anything.
Key Moment at Miami
My research in the Department of Anthropology has become one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done! I love working on a study that involves real human beings where I feel that the results of the study can have a truly meaningful impact. I was proudly able to present my research at the Undergraduate Research Forum back in April 2025, and I am presenting it again in Orlando this Valentine's Day! Additionally, I completed a study abroad program at our Luxembourg campus in winter of 2025, where I was able to complete a study tour in Geneva, Switzerland that included an intensive at the United Nations. This experience was so unique and valuable and taught me a lot about global peacekeeping efforts. The friends I made in my study abroad experience are some some of my closest friends at Miami now!
Other Notable Experience
I am currently the Inclusion Chair for the OH-gamma chapter of Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity. PhiDE has been such an amazing organization that have given me so much, so I am very excited at the opportunity to give back to everyone else in my chapter! My role is to help our members become as culturally competent as possible through education and awareness. I am excited to work with our VP of recruitment to ensure that we are recruiting equitably across campus! Additionally, I am starting Miami's first baking club, Red Brick Bakers, with some of my friends, for which I will be Vice President. My job with be to actually come up with the recipes and programming for meetings. We are super excited to launch this year!
Advice to Prospective Students
You will see so many schools that have amazing opportunities, but Miami has amazing opportunities, AND professors and resources that will allow you to actually take advantage of those opportunities. There were so many opportunities that were mentioned to me when I attended a Make It Miami event after being accepted, and I am happy to say that almost all of them have come to be and I have only completed three semesters at Miami!
Other Advice
No matter what major you are, take GHS (Global Health Studies)101 with Dr. Hay-Rollins. Global Health is a truly interdisciplinary field and there is a place for everyone in the fight for equitable health for all. Half of the lectures are taught by guest professors in tons of different disciplines, which makes it all the more interesting!
What are your career goals?
My plan after graduating is to matriculate into medical school! I want to be a physician, hopefully back on my home region in the Washington, D.C., area. I would love to be an OB/GYN and potentially become a maternal fetal specialist. My dream is to be able to complete research in my field and advise or write health policy!
