This experience is built into the program as a zero-credit course focused on providing students with an opportunity to demonstrate their counseling skills in person during an on-site mock clinical experience created to ensure students are prepared for practicum in the spring. This course is a prerequisite for practicum and will occur during finals week of the fall semester. The EDP 671 Helping Skills in Mental Health Intervention and the EDP 653 Counseling Skills Pre-Practicum course allows students to implement the acquired techniques in a mock setting before working with clients and students prior to starting the EDP 654 Counseling Practicum course. Students must pass the on-site clinical in order to start practicum in the spring.
Students are required to be in person for the Pre-Practicum component of the program. The Pre-Practicum Experience is built into the EDP 653 Counseling Skills Pre-Practicum, a zero-credit hour, complete/incomplete course. This on-site skills lab will occur during the fall of students’ first year during finals week. Students are responsible for all expenses related to the Pre-Practicum Experience, including travel, parking, and lodging expenses.
As part of the pre-practicum experience, students will be required to demonstrate the skills they learned in EDP 671 Helping Skills in Mental Health Intervention. The minimum passing score needed is an 83% (B). Students must pass the Pre-Practicum Assessment in order to start practicum in the Spring Semester. Students will have three opportunities to pass the assessment during finals week. All students will be assessed twice, and the highest score will be kept as the passing score. All students will engage in additional on-site practice sessions in-between the first and second attempt of the assessment. There will be a third opportunity to take the Pre-Practicum Assessment and engage in additional on-site practice sessions for students who are unable to score at or above an 83% (B) in either the first or second attempt. If a student fails all three attempts, then a Pre-Practicum Remediation plan will be created as part of their Professional Development Plan (PDP). The following section details the next steps.
Students will be provided three opportunities to pass the Pre-Practicum Assessment during finals week of the Fall Semester at the Pre-Practicum Experience. If a student is unable to successfully complete one of the assessments with at least an 83% (B), a Pre-Practicum Remediation plan will be developed for the student as part of their PDP. The student will have an opportunity to retake the Pre-Practicum Assessment the following Fall Semester during finals week (second attempt at the Pre-Practicum Experience). The student will be able to continue in the program but will not be able to start practicum, as scheduled, in the Spring Semester. They will work with their advisor to make adjustments to their program of study and will come back the following Fall Semester. All students will be limited to two attempts at the Pre-Practicum Experience, which is six total attempts at the Pre-Practicum Assessment (three at each Pre-Practicum Experience). If a student is unable to pass the Pre-Practicum Assessment during the second attempt at the Pre-Practicum Experience, they will not be able to continue and will be dismissed from the program.
There is paid metered parking around the Miami University campus that students without parking passes can utilize when parking on campus for the Pre-Practicum component. Paid parking is also available at the Campus Avenue and North Campus Garage. Students are responsible for transportation and parking expenses for this requirement. More information regarding parking services can be found on Miami’s website.
