International Peer Orientation Leader (iPOL)

International Peer Orientation Leaders (iPOLs) are undergraduate or graduate students who assist ISSS with welcoming new international students to Miami University. iPOLs play an integral role in shaping a positive orientation experience for new international students and preparing them to achieve success at Miami University.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in required iPOL training and April, as well as the entire international student orientation (held during August) each year.
  • Serve as a resource in answering questions about Miami University, the Oxford community, and life in the U.S.
  • Connect new international students with university resources and introduce them to university policies
  • Facilitate small group discussions about cultural adjustment
  • Plan and facilitate orientation activities (cultural and/or recreational)
  • Assist with airport pick-up transportation and helping students move into the residence halls with their luggage
  • Assist with document check, TB tests, and orientation sessions
  • Respond promptly to emails regarding your schedule and work responsibilities

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled full-time at Miami University as an undergraduate or graduate student
  • Completed at least one semester at Miami University at the time of application
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the time of application
  • Have no other obligations during your employment as an iPOL
  • Effective cross-cultural communication skills and cross-cultural sensitivity in working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to direct students to appropriate campus units or resources, and answer questions
  • Punctual, reliable, flexible and enthusiastic
  • Ability to proactively solve problems and take initiative to assist ISSS staff to improve the quality of orientation
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and listening skills
  • Ability to plan and lead recreational activities

Important Dates

If you are selected after interview, you MUST be able to attend the training to be able to work during orientation.

Mandatory iPOL Training

April 4 and April 18, 2020 from 9:00am-12:00pm. Brunch will be provided. All day training on August 11 and August 12, 2020. Lunch will be provided.

Please note: iPOL returner application deadline is December 2, 2019 and selections will be made by December 9, 2019. Some returner applicants might receive an interview request. Selected returner iPOLs are required to attend April training as well.
