Latest Janus Forum offering explores presidential power on Oct. 15

Presidential power is the focus of the latest offering from the biannual Janus Forum, held Oct. 15 in Armstrong Student Center’s Wilks Theater and featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Caitlin Dickerson and John Katko, U.S. representative for New York’s 24th District from 2015-2023.

“Debating Energy in the Executive: Trump and Presidential Power” begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Tickets, required, are available through Miami’s online Box Office. A public reception will follow.

“We anticipate this fall's forum to explore a range of topics that center on the extent of presidential power,” said Patrick Haney, professor of Political Science. “We have not seen challenges to our basic understanding of the limits of presidential power like this in quite some time, and across a broad range of topical areas from trade to spending to war powers. I also expect we will tackle these issues with both enthusiasm and civility. It is more important than ever to be able to explore differences with civil discourse.”

Dickerson won the Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Journalism in 2023, and she has also received the Peabody Award and Edward R. Murrow Award. Currently a staff writer at the Atlantic, Dickerson has worked for the New York Times, CNN, and NPR.

Along with his experience in the House of Representatives, Katko is a former federal prosecutor and the host of “Balancing Act with John Katko” on PBS.

“Especially in this time of heightened polarization in our political discourse, it is so important that we have opportunities like this to hear experts on different sides of an issue discuss their differences in a respectful and civil manner,” said John Forren, executive director of Miami’s Menard Family Center for Democracy. “I look forward to hearing these two nationally prominent experts discuss their views on this clearly important topic.”

Hailey Sellett, a senior Political Science and Data Analytics double major, will serve as moderator. Sellett is also president of the Janus Forum.

Sellett became involved with the Janus Forum as a first-year student. Being able to help pick topics and get to know the speakers has been a highlight for the Miami senior.

“To me, hosting a public forum like Janus is incredibly important, especially in uncertain political times. This event allows so many students and the general public to become educated on topics they are unfamiliar with,” Sellett said. “Janus helps students to hear opinions from both sides of the political spectrum, allowing them to draw their own conclusions generically.

“Hosting a public forum like this allows people the opportunity to have their voices heard and their questions answered by the speakers, both during the event and at the reception after. Civil and political discourse should not be something people frown upon or are afraid of but should be embraced as an important learning opportunity for everyone involved.”

Offered twice each year, the Janus Forum is sponsored by the Department of Political Science with the generous support of Thomas W. Smith ’50 and the Menard Family Center for Democracy.
