A message to the Miami University community

A message from Miami University President Gregory Crawford

Dear Miami Family,

I know that yesterday’s alert and the uncertainty that followed were frightening for many in our community. Though we ultimately learned there was no active shooter or gunshots – and we are exceedingly grateful for that – we acknowledge that receiving an alert like that can cause panic and confusion. Please extend grace and kindness to one another as we individually and collectively process what happened.

The safety and well-being of our community is our top priority. I am grateful to the officers from the Miami University Police Department, Oxford Police Department, and Butler County Sheriff’s Office for their swift response and quick work to secure the scene. I am also grateful to the students, faculty, and staff for taking the alert seriously, following emergency instructions, and taking steps to protect themselves and one another during a frightening and uncertain situation.

Our commitment to protecting our community means continually learning and improving. In the days and weeks ahead, MUPD and Miami’s Crisis Management Team will review yesterday’s events and how we responded, identify lessons learned, and use those insights to strengthen our emergency preparedness, training, response, and communications.

I encourage those who need additional support to access our available resources and ask for help. Support resources are available for students through the Student Counseling Service or Regionals Student Counseling Services, including the 24/7 H.O.P.E. Line, as well as through the Office of the Dean of Students. Faculty and staff: Support resources are available through the Employee Assistance Program.

As we head into this Family Weekend, I am feeling especially grateful for the care and support that define our Miami community. I hope that you all will take time to pause, reconnect with your family and friends, and find comfort in being together.

Love and Honor,

Gregory P. Crawford
