Credit for Prior Learning and Assessment Opportunity for Criminal Justice Majors
Have you gained college-level knowledge through work, military service, professional training, certifications, or life experiences? Through Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), Miami University may award credit for learning acquired outside the classroom.
CJS Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
The Department of Social Sciences and Education offers students the opportunity to earn college credit for CJS 101, Intro the Criminal Justice System, and/or CJS 225, Law and Courts in America, through PLA.
Consistent with our belief in valuing students’ experiences outside the classroom, we recognize that some Miami University students have achieved the learning outcomes for CJS 101 and/or CJS 225 and should be offered the opportunity to demonstrate that learning and receive college credit.
CJS 101 offers an overview of America's criminal justice system, with an emphasis on the development, functions, and current issues/problems facing the current criminal justice system with a focus on the history, roles, and present state of the police, courts, and corrections.
CJS 225 provides a critical examination of the American judicial system and legal processes with a focus on the contextual meaning of law and justice to society and will encourage critical thinking from political, sociological, historical, and philosophical perspectives.

Costs:
- $70 to complete each test; fee applies whether the student earns credit.
- If student receives credit, the test fee covers the first credit hour; additional credit hours are $35 per credit hour; a student taking the exam for CJS 101 would pay $70 if they did not pass it or $140 ($70 + two additional credits at $35 per credit hour) if they passed it and received three hours of credit.
