The sustainability of any enterprise includes economic, social and environmental dimensions. Businesses have increasingly embraced the triple-bottom line of people, planet and profit to reflect these three broad areas of sustainability. This has inspired businesses and other organizations to adopt third party assessments such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) as a standard for sustainability reporting.
A widely used reporting tool for higher education is the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
Miami University completed its first STARS assessment in March 2013 and received a Silver rating.
