From the Director’s Desk

Dear Friends and Alumni,

As we start the new year, Miami pre-law students have a lot to be proud of. Not only have many of them succeeded in their law school admissions goals, but our students have engaged in more pre-law opportunities than ever before as they seek to learn about the legal profession and its fit for them.

In 2014-15, nearly 200 pre-law students registered for various pre-law course offerings aimed at exposing students to the legal profession and preparing them to be competitive law school applicants. Students who registered for Miami’s LSAT preparation course saw an average score increase of over four points on the LSAT. And, 95% of Miami senior applicants were accepted to law school in 2014.

More importantly, with the help our alumni, students are making better, more informed decisions about law school and whether it is right for them. While many pre-law students heard from our legal alumni in the classroom through pre-law course offerings, others sought out Winter Term shadowing opportunities with our alumni in the courtroom. And yet others traveled around the world with a large global law firm to learn the business of big law, and worked with our alumni in a local Oxford law firm.

Indeed, the generosity of our alumni in both funding and exposing students to these experiences is what makes the difference for pre-law students. Your support has made Miami’s LSAT preparation course possible, provided need-based scholarships to students preparing for the LSAT, allowed students to experience the inter-workings of law firms, enabled the Program to continue to provide important advising functions as our students navigate their career decisions and the financial implications of law school, and much more.

A heartfelt thank you to each one of you who has contributed to the success of our students with your time and donations. With your new and continued support, I look forward to partnering to do even more to serve our students throughout the upcoming year.

Warm regards,

Maria P. Vitullo, Esq.

New Pre-Law Scholarships

The Pre-Law Program is pleased to announce two new scholarships established for the benefit of pre-law students. The Albert A. and Frances M. Kerzic Scholarship was established by Lynda Given, Esq. (‘77) of Chapman & Cutler, Chicago, IL, in honor of her parents. The Lloyd O’Hara Scholarship was established by the Dayton Bar Association with the assistance of Jeffrey Cox, Esq. (‘82) of Faruki, Ireland & Cox PLL, Dayton, OH.

James Pride, a junior who plans to take Miami's LSAT preparation course this spring, was a 2015 scholarship recipient.  "[The scholarship] gives me the opportunity to take the course and hopefully improve my LSAT score for the upcoming applications in the fall. I struggled preparing for the LSAT the first time around by myself, so I appreciate the opportunity to take the class," Pride said.
