English Language Proficiency
To study at Miami University, you must be able to understand lectures in English from the first day of classes. Because of this, if your native language is not English, you are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or provide alternative evidence of English language proficiency.
To learn about TOEFL test dates and testing center locations, and to register online for the TOEFL, visit www.toefl.org. Please note that you must take the international TOEFL. Institutional TOEFL scores are not acceptable. Miami University's TOEFL code is 1463.
If you are accepted for admission at Miami, you will take another English examination before you register for classes. You may be assigned to a special English course, depending on the results. In addition, if you have been awarded an assistantship with instructional duties, you will be required to take an English speaking test upon your arrival. New students are not allowed to assume any teaching duties until the English speaking test has been passed. Miami University does not have a full-time intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
To be considered for admission into a graduate degree program at Miami University, international students whose native language is not English should have earned either a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test or a score of 80 on the Internet-based version. These are the minimum TOEFL scores for admission by the Graduate School. Some programs may have higher score requirements.
