Best Practices for Students Missing Class for University-Sponsored Activities

Best Practices for Accommodating Students Missing Class for University-Sponsored Activities is a companion document to the Class Attendance Policy.

Students missing class for a university-sponsored activity:

  • Should discuss with the course instructor options for obtaining missed material and/or participation points (e.g. attending another section of the course; providing a short reflection on the missed assignment; if permissible, having a classmate record the lecture; or reviewing a recording of the lecture provided by the instructor and completing related assignments).
  • Should not be required to take an exam within two (2) business days of arriving back from a multi-day event, competition, or championship or a trip greater than three (3) days in duration. However, students can choose to take an exam prior to their trip or while traveling if possible.
  • Should not be expected to complete an assignment more than 55 minutes in duration while traveling on any given day due to limited availability for completing schoolwork while competing.
  • Should not be able to complete any schoolwork while recovering from a concussion. Faculty must follow the guidance of medical professionals in this instance.
  • Must discuss and determine when and where a make-up exam will be completed with their course instructor. If the student is registered with Student Disability Services, they may make up their exam at Rinella Testing Center.
