English Language Proficiency

Miami University requires that international students whose native language is not English provide proof of English language proficiency with their admission application.

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements below may be offered direct admission to a bachelor's degree program on our main campus in Oxford, Ohio.

Below is the list of acceptable test scores and qualifications that meet Miami's minimum English language proficiency requirements for direct admission. See exemptions to our English test requirements.

Exemptions:

  • Students who are citizens of any of the following expanded list of countries are now exempted from the English proficency requirement without submitting additional documentation and are eligible for direct admission into a Bachelor's degree program if otherwise qualified.1
  • Course equivalency of Miami's English composition requirement at another U.S. institution.
  • Enrollment in AP English Language and Composition or AP English Literature.
  • Enrollment in IB English A at either HL or SL as part of a full IB program.
  • Students whose first language is not English but who have completed three or more years at a US or Canadian high school are exempted from the English proficiency requirement and are now eligible for direct admission into a Bachelor’s degree program if otherwise qualified.
