Dr. Bernadette "bird" Bowen's (she/they/Dr.) background is in Sociology, and their masters is in Communication. Most recently, she publishes poetry, earned a PhD in Media and Communication, and a BGSU Women, Gender, Sexualities Studies certificate.
Their undergraduate degree in Sociology provided her with foundational research knowledge regarding a broad range of social issues (including but not limited to: race, sex, class, ability, and gender studies) and the contemporary existence of varied interlocking discriminations on the basis of one’s social location.
Her focus has always been on the taken for granted reproduction of norms, both in everyday conversation, as well as in media representations.
Throughout their master’s coursework she looked at societal phenomena and inquired about the prioritization of profit over people.
Alongside a handful of colleagues since 2019, Bernadette has helped spearhead a critical feminist wave of media ecology that incorporates cultural studies, further exemplifying her personal critical media ecological framework.
