Biochemistry

Biochemistry involves the study of life on the molecular level. Biochemists blend chemical and biological approaches to develop molecular models of life processes in organisms ranging from microbes to humans. Biochemists develop new technologies in areas ranging from biotechnology and genetic engineering to biomedical engineering.

B.S. Biochemistry

The B.S. in Biochemistry was created in accord with American Chemical Society guidelines and is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This program is designed for students who wish to become professional scientists with a strong foundation in biochemistry.

Pre-health Sciences Concentration

The Pre-health Sciences focus allows students to specialize a BS degree in Biochemistry by selecting advanced CHM, Mathematics, and related cognate courses that will make students competitive in the field.

The Pre-health Sciences focus is for students looking to pursue postgraduate education in the medical field, such as an MD, DO, or PA. Our focused Biochemistry degree will ready students for a career as a physician/physician’s assistant or within the clinical trials and medical sales field.

Biotechnology & Computational Modeling Concentration

The Biotechnology & Computational Modeling focuses allow students to specialize in a BS degree in Biochemistry by selecting advanced CHM, Mathematics, and related cognate courses that will make students competitive in the field. Students may also wish to add a complementary minor to help enhance their degree.

The Biotechnology & Computational Modeling focuses are for students looking to enter the rapidly advancing field of biotechnology start-ups and big data.

Learning Outcomes for Students

At graduation, we expect that our majors can

Describe, synthesize, and critique the methodological approaches presented in primary references (peer-reviewed journal articles in chemistry/biochemistry) and/or generated in student-led research

Explain and synthesize chemistry concepts presented in laboratory research scenarios

Write well-organized, clear, logical, grammatically correct literature critiques and laboratory reports

B.A. Biochemistry

The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in chemistry and biochemistry, with the flexibility to pursue other interests including other majors, study abroad, or extensive work or volunteer activities. This degree can be taken in a teaching certification track, which requires additional related credit hours taken from the College of Education, Health, and Society and results in teaching certification.

Bioengineering Focus

The Bioengineering focus allows students to specialize in a BA degree in Biochemistry by selecting advanced CHM, Mathematics, and related cognate courses that will make students competitive in the field. Beyond the CHM major, thematic sequences, additional majors, minors, and co-majors will build skillsets based on student interest.

The Bioengineering focus is for the student looking for a career in areas such as design, sales, training and technology for biomaterials and biochemistry start-ups. The BA degree in Biochemistry allows students the flexibility to double major in other disciplines and spend time studying abroad. This major is also well suited for students wishing to pursue postgraduate education in the medical field or the engineering field.
