The Milton White Award in Creative Writing

Milton White was a beloved writer, professor, and mentor, who had a significant impact on his students and colleagues. One of the early directors of Creative Writing, he retired in 1981 after more than 25 years at Miami. The Milton White Award is open to current Creative Writing students who aspire a full-time career in writing.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the department’s Creative Writing programs are eligible.
  • Applicants should aspire to a full-time career in writing.
  • Continuing students only; students must be enrolled for the 2025/26 academic year to receive the financial award.
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.

What you need to submit:

For Fiction and nonfiction: Submit one work (for example, an excerpt from a novel, script). 10-25 pages, double-spaced.

For Poetry: Submit a collection of poems, limited to 10 pages.

In addition, all applicants must submit a 1-2 page essay commemorating the life and work of former Miami English Professor Milton White.
