Geospatial Analysis Center

The Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC), located in the Department of Geography at Miami University, is the central resource for geospatial research, education, and outreach. It supports students, faculty, and staff with geospatial data, analysis, and access to licensed GIS software, and offers consulting services in these areas.

The GAC is located in the Department of Geography in Shideler Hall. Requests for research, contracts, and geospatial outreach can be emailed to Robbyn Abbitt (abbittrj@MiamiOH.edu).

Internships

We've collected a wide range of GIS internship opportunities across several local municipalities as well as an internship opportunity recently accepted with the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. Some of these positions have been specifically reserved for students from Miami University, providing a unique and tailored experience for our students within the field of Geographic Information Systems.

Oxford Cemetery Digital Mapping Resources

In Fall 2023 and Spring 2024, 54 Advanced GIS Students worked over 500 hours to map Oxford Cemetery for the City of Oxford locating 6,333 headstones. Our website offers comprehensive access to veteran gravestones and features additional resources, such as a gravefinder and narratives about many individuals resting in Oxford Cemetery.

GIS Projects and Research

Miami University Natural Areas and Trails Map

GIS students at Miami University developed a comprehensive trail map for the Miami University Natural Areas (MUNA) to improve trail understanding and accessibility. Through fieldwork and data collection, they gathered trail data using GPS and then utilized GIS software to create detailed maps highlighting trail features and landmarks. The final deliverables included these maps and a report with analyses and recommendations for trail management and enhancements.

Mapping Recent Fire History in the Aberdare Range, Kenya

Mary Henry and John Maingi of the Geography Department developed new burn severity thresholds for Differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) and Relative Differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (RdNBR) for Landsat and Sentinel data. They assessed the correlation between VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) fire radiative power and these new thresholds, using satellite imagery from 2014 to 2023 to improve fire severity mapping in the Aberdare Range.

Creating Maps for Butler County's Donut Trail Cycle Challenge

Robbyn Abbitt (GIS Coordinator) and the Advanced GIS students mapped the Donut Trail Cycle Challenge as part of their Advanced GIS Service Learning Course. They used GIS tools to create detailed, user-friendly maps highlighting the cycling route and key points of interest. Their work aimed to enhance the cycling experience and support tourism in Butler County.

Flood Stage Visualization at Brookville Lake in Collaboration with the Army Corps of Engineers

Advanced GIS students did work on mapping flooding areas in Brookville. As part of their project, they used GIS tools to analyze and map flood-prone areas, which involved assessing historical flood data, evaluating topographical features, and predicting potential flood impacts. This project aimed to provide valuable insights for flood management and planning in the Brookville area.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate GISci Certificate

The Undergraduate GISci Certificate can be earned as a stand-alone Certificate or as part of broader undergraduate education at Miami. Note that the GISci Certificate can be counted as a Thematic Sequence for students outside of the Department of Geography by completing a Self-Designed Thematic Sequence application with the Office of Liberal Education.

Current Miami Undergraduate students in any department wishing to add the GISci Certificate must contact the GISci Certificate Advisor, Robbyn Abbitt, to fill out the necessary paperwork.

Former Miami students and alumni returning to Miami to earn the Undergraduate GISci Certificate must fill out the Re-enrollment forms at the One Stop. Indicate on the form that you are returning for a Non-Degree program. Once your student status has been reset, you must contact the GISci Certificate Advisor, Robbyn Abbitt, to fill out the necessary paperwork.

Those coming to Miami for the first time and for only the Undergraduate GISci Certificate must go through the formal Miami admission process for Non-Degree seeking students. This admission is on a rolling basis and can be completed up to the start of a semester. Once you are officially enrolled, you must contact the GISci Certificate Advisor, Robbyn Abbitt, to fill out the necessary paperwork.

Graduate GISci Certificate

The Graduate GISci Certificate can be earned as a stand-alone Certificate or as part of broader graduation education at Miami.

Current Miami Graduate students in any department wishing to enroll in the GISci Certificate must complete the certificate application form to start the process. You will be contacted by the GISci Certificate Advisor after you fill out this application.
