Tandana Foundation Partnership
Since 2024, Department of Global and Intercultural Studies has joined in a partnership with The Tandana Foundation, an Ohio-based non-profit organization devoted to community development initiatives in Mali and Ecuador. Through this partnership, faculty and students have the opportunity to directly contribute to lasting change-making in rural communities, fostering cultural exchanges, economic initiatives, and international relationship-building. Miami students have the unique opportunity to engage in faculty-led immersive study abroad programs, in-person and remote internships, and GIC course content built to supplement the on-the-ground work that Tandana carries out in these regions.

Only by engaging with each other can we find the meaningfulness of shared purpose. Though we cannot see the outcome, we can move slowly in a positive direction, climbing together.

As part of this partnership, Miami students have the opportunity to interact and learn directly from community leaders in Ecuador facilitated by Tandana Foundation staff. For example, students in LAS 385, a class on the history of public health in the Americas, students learn about how indigenous and Western health practices coexist in Ecuador.
As we continue strengthening our GIC curriculum we look forward to building on this model to include more Tandana content in courses houses in GIC.
