Jennifer Redmond Receives Jerry Liguori Scholarship for Raptor Conservation

Jennifer Redmond

Miami University graduate student Jennifer Redmond has received the Jerry Liguori Scholarship, which will help further her master’s work connecting the Colorado community to American Kestrel conservation. Created in honor of Jerry Liguori and his contributions to raptor conservation, the fund supports research, professional development, and educational experiences centered around raptor migration, identification, and natural history. It is uniquely focused on supporting equity in access and opportunities for all to experience raptors, including students of all ages, those just entering the raptor field, novices, and professionals.

Redmond’s passion for raptors began when she had the chance to release a rehabilitated American Kestrel while working at the University of Iowa Wildlife Camps. "Watching the male kestrel take flight and return to the wild was a thrill and shaped my future!"

Redmond is earning a Master of Arts (MA) in the biological sciences from Miami University through Project Dragonfly’s Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) while working as an optometrist in Denver, Colorado and volunteering as a docent and raptor handler for the past 17 years at a local raptor center. She has experience in banding American Kestrels, Barn Owls, Saw-whet Owls, and Boreal Owls. As an AIP student, Redmond takes web-based Miami courses and explores Denver Zoo and natural areas around Colorado.

A mother of three, Redmond became a Girl Scout leader when her girls got involved with scouting. Now she is combining her experience as a scout leader with her master's project, engaging youth in science and conservation along Colorado's Front Range. She has created several programs to connect youth to raptor conservation, including a community science Girl Scout event with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and a Raptor Expo with the Raptor Education Foundation. Now, with support from HawkWatch International, she is focused on expanding her kestrel nest box project and implementing a Kestrel Cam for the Town of Parker, Colorado.
