GFP student awarded Pelecanus scholarship; shares about her community conservation work

Current Global Field Program (GFP) graduate student Emily Summers of Waialua, Hawai’i, talks about pursuing her master's in biology, her studies through Earth Expeditions, and her work in fostering true community-based conservation in a bonus Pelecanus podcast episode. She is currently developing a community powered coral reef monitoring program with aims of growing into community-led coral out-planting efforts on the island of O'ahu. Summers is also the 2024 recipient of Pelecanus' Carrie Wilson Memorial Scholarship. "Emily has done great work already, and we're very proud to award her this scholarship," shared by Pelecanus.

Pelecanus is a non-profit organization co-founded by AIP graduate Austin Parker '18 and his brother Taylor. Pelecanus created the Carrie R. Wilson Memorial Scholarship in 2021 in memory of Carrie Wilson, who served as Dean of Students at the University of San Diego Law School and believed in community inspiration through direct and intentional action.

As a student in Miami's biology department, Summers is earning a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Biology through Project Dragonfly's GFP.
