Inspiring empathy on behalf of sssensational snakes
Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) graduate Karina Altman '23 of Burlington, Kentucky, was published in Animal Keepers’ Forum, a journal of the American Association of Zoo Keepers. Her article, "Sssensational Snakes: Overcoming Fear by Inspiring Empathy," addresses snake phobia, a prevalent animal fear in the U.S., and how educational zoo programs, such as the snake show at the Ark Encounter's Ararat Ridge Zoo in Kentucky, can improve people's attitudes toward snakes.
Altman earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Biology from Miami through Project Dragonfly’s AIP while working as the Animal Programs Manager at the Ark Encounter's Ararat Ridge Zoo in Williamstown, Kentucky. As an AIP student, Altman participated in experiential learning at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.
