Overview of the New Clinical Health Sciences and Wellness Building

Recently I had the privilege of speaking to Dr. Chris Makaroff, the Dean of the College of Arts and Science. Dean Makaroff sat down with me to share some details on the new Clinical Health Sciences and Wellness building being built on campus. This building will house the future Physician Associate (PA) program coming to campus, as well as the current Nursing program, the Speech Pathology and Audiology program, and Student Health Center.

Through the Boldly Creative Initiative, President Crawford has set aside money to advance the future of Miami. This fund is supporting many projects all over campus, from improving the data science and analytics program to one of the most recent projects, expanding the health career programs on campus. The university noticed the increased interest in health careers, both on campus and throughout the country and wanted to become more competitive in that field. In order to do this, they took the initiative to begin a PA program on campus, which will be matriculating its first class this May. Many other schools have graduate level programs in health fields, and with this knowledge, Miami wanted to extend the academic vigor currently found at the university to the healthcare field. Additionally, the recent addition of the Nursing program on the Oxford campus allows for a unique opportunity for students. The Nursing program and the PA program will be able to work together, sharing the space and collaborating on future projects. The idea of collaborating is at the forefront at Miami and occurs both within the building and with other groups in the area. For example, one current idea is to allow the PA, Nursing, and Speech Pathology students to help with healthcare at Goggin Ice Center. The close proximity will allow students to have unique firsthand experiences as they help the University’s hockey team with medical needs. The construction of this new building is an ambitious project that brings new healthcare education opportunities to Miami and allows for students to obtain many unique experiences.
