Juries

Performance examinations in applied music are called juries.

Policies for juries:

  1. All students (majors, minors, and non-majors) registered for music lessons are required to perform a jury (performance examination) at the end of each semester of study. With the approval of the instructor, the jury may be waived during the semester in which a required senior or graduate recital is presented. Evaluation procedures for performance examinations are the responsibility of each applied music area.

  2. All students registered for music lessons must be granted sophomore standing in applied music as a prerequisite for enrollment in lessons at the MUS 200 level. Sophomore standing is normally attainable at the end of the second semester of study. The specific requirements for the achievement of sophomore standing are determined by each applied music area.

    Students who are not granted sophomore standing must continue to register for lessons at the MUS 100 level. After two semesters at a given level, music majors and performance minors are required to take a jury to advance to the next level. Students who fail to advance to the next level of applied music after two attempts are not allowed to continue as either a music major or a performance minor.

  3. All students registered for music lessons must be granted junior standing as a prerequisite for enrollment in lessons at the MUS 300 level. Junior standing is normally attainable at the end of the fourth semester of study. The requirements for the achievement on junior standing are determined by each applied music area.

    Students who are not granted junior standing must continue to register for lessons at the MUS 200 level. After two semesters at a given level, music majors and performance minors are required to take a jury to advance to the next level. Students who fail to advance to the next level of applied music after two attempts are not allowed to continue as either a music major or a performance minor.

  4. During the jury for junior standing, at least three Music faculty members must be present.
