Handshake

Handshake is your gateway to all things career at Miami University, from exploring your options with your career advisor to applying for jobs and internships.

It Starts with a Handshake

At Miami, you’ll use Handshake to:

  • Schedule appointments with your career advisor.
  • Register for Career Center programs and events.
  • Research 200,000+ vetted employers from across the nation, including through our targeted Miami Collections.
  • Search and apply for jobs and internships.
Students who enroll at Miami automatically have a Handshake account created for them. To activate it, just log into Handshake with your Miami credentials. Also be sure to declare/update your career cluster(s) so you can receive information tailored to your interests.

Take the Handshake Challenge

When you’re in the market for a job or internship, make sure to keep your Handshake profile up to date. It’s quick and easy to make updates, and having a strong profile can help you stand out to employers.

Add/Update Your Resume Files

Keep your resume up to date. Add internships, research, certifications, or classes from recent semesters/terms so potential employers can get a full picture of who you are as a candidate.

Add Five Skills to Your Profile

Showcase skills directly on your profile to give employers an at-a-glance view of what you can bring to the workplace.

Add Extracurricular Activities

Your extracurricular activities, such as your work as a volunteer or in a student organization, can display your character and time-management skills.

Letting employers know what types of roles you’re interested in can help open the right doors.

Search for positions and employers in places where you want to live. Your listed preferences can be as specific or vague as you’d like.

Take the time to research opportunities posted by employers. Save any jobs or internships that are of interest to you so you can apply or reference them later.

Depending on where you are in your career journey, you may not know the job titles connected with your major. By listing career opportunities by targeted disciplines and industries, our Miami Collections address this challenge.

Best of all, our featured organizations hire RedHawks! To explore the Miami Collections:

  • Log into Handshake with your Miami credentials.
  • On your student home page, scroll to the Miami collections, and click “view more.”
  • Click on your desired Collections card.

Protecting Yourself and Other Miami Students on Handshake

Online job and career boards can be intimidating. We vet employers the best we can with the information we have available. However, if you encounter an employer that raises concerns, you can flag it for a Handshake review. Be certain to do your due diligence and research before engaging with employers on any online job board.

Stand Out Online: Professional Headshot Booth

Update your Handshake and LinkedIn profiles with a new head shot from our Professional Headshot Booth. This FREE service is quick and easy to use. You’ll even receive your digital photos the same day.

Location and Hours

  • The booth is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Career Center (45 Armstrong).
  • The process only takes five to 10 minutes.
  • You can apply filters, eliminate blemishes, whiten teeth, and more through the booth’s innovative, self-service design.
  • If you anticipate or experience a disability-related barrier to using the booth, contact careercenter@MiamiOH.edu to schedule a headshot appointment.

Process and Delivery

  • Drop by! No appointment is needed. 
  • If using your phone:
    • Scan the QR Code and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • Make sure your phone doesn’t lapse into “rest mode” or you will need to finish your photo session using the touch screen.
  • You will be emailed your photos by no-reply@iris-booth.com. Create a free account, then log into the platform to download your headshots.
