Meet Savanna, a junior Information Technology major, who is participating in an exchange program in Glasgow, Scotland this semester.
In this week's Where in the World is Miami Wednesday, we meet Savanna Stoddard, a junior Information Technology major who is studying abroad in Glasgow, Scotland this semester.
What are you studying in your program?
Digital Media and Information Studies
Why did you choose your study abroad program?
I’ve always had a fascination for Scotland and the culture. I’ve also heard that Glasgow is rated one of the friendliest cities. The University of Glasgow is also gorgeous and highly rated, which really drew me in.
How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your experience?
Before arriving, I had to be tested before traveling through the Netherlands. This wasn’t difficult to manage, as I was able to get a test in time and I tested negative before flying. Once I arrived in Glasgow, I had to complete a 10-day mandatory quarantine in my flat. They provided me with food for a few days and offered services so that I could order groceries or takeaway.
Since being out of quarantine and school starting, I’ve adjusted quickly to the city and the COVID-19 regulations. When in stores, we are required to wear masks. There is also a lockdown in place for the country, but we are allowed to travel within our council area for outdoor recreation, which is what I love doing.
COVID-19 has definitely affected my experience and made it impossible to travel to the highlands or other areas that I’d like to see in Scotland, but I’ve adjusted and am enjoying Glasgow on its own. I’m just happy to be here!
What are the coolest places you have visited on your program?
Glasgow City Center, Pollock Country Park, and the University of Glasgow itself. Not much traveling is allowed currently due to the lockdown restrictions.
What is your favorite part of your program so far?
I love meeting new people and seeing a different perspective to things. I also love the many different accents I hear. The city itself is nice as well and has many different restaurants and cultural cuisines to try.
How has the study abroad experience changed you so far?
I’ve become more independent and confident. I feel as though I also have a better understanding of other countries and their cultures.
