Global Initiatives Launches Ambassador in Residence Program

Throughout his time in the foreign service, Carlo Krieger has maintained strong ties with Miami.

Miami is proud of our many alumni who have gone on to work in the diplomatic and foreign services sectors, in the United States and in other countries. To celebrate these alumni, Global Initiatives is inaugurating an Ambassador in Residence program.

Through this program, alumni are invited to campus for a short residency. During this time they will be available for public speaking, classroom visits and meetings, student advising, and other faculty, staff, and student engagement opportunities.

From  February 28–March 15, our first Ambassador in Residence will be Carlo Krieger, Ph.D. A native of Luxembourg, Dr. Krieger grew up on a farm outside of Mertert, a small village on the banks of the Moselle River. He began his studies at the University of Vienna, then went on to Miami to receive a B.A. in social anthropology in 1981.

Krieger continued his studies at the University of Chicago as a Fulbright grantee, before receiving his Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Vienna.

He served as an Ambassador in Brazil (co-accredited to Chile), in China (co-accredited to Mongolia and Pakistan) and in Russia (co-accredited to Khazakstan and Georgia). He also served as a deputy (DCM) in the Embassies in Washington, DC (also for Canada and Mexico), and in Vienna (OSCE, Slovakia).

Krieger's academic interests lie in the realms of social anthropology, and specifically the Native American experience in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. He has been involved with the American Indian Workshop in Europe since its beginnings in the early 1980s.

He is an expert in areas related to foreign service, particularly the areas in which he served as the Luxembourg ambassador: Brazil, China, Mongolia, Pakistan, Austria, Canada, and Mexico.

Krieger has been honored with the Commandeur, Ordre de la couronne de chêne (Luxembourg) and Grã-cruz, Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul (Brazil).

During his years in the foreign service, Krieger has maintained a close relationship with the Miami University John E. Dolibois European Center (MUDEC), even teaching one semester. In all his posts, he hosted study tours, professors, and student groups. Krieger currently serves on the MUDEC Alumni Advisory Board.

If your department or organization wishes to connect with Dr. Krieger during his residency, please contact the assistant director of Miami in Luxembourg, Kimberly Miller (mill2050@MiamiOH.edu).
