The Miami University Commencement Ceremony is a beloved tradition — a culminating celebration of the accomplishments of our graduates and those who were with them along the way. We look forward to coming together, not only to recognize the hard work, dedication, and commitment that leads up to this day; but also to reflect on the special journey — the Miami Experience — unique to each graduate, yet also shared by all Miamians.
In addition to participating in the December and May commencement ceremonies, the Graduate School also hosted a Doctoral Hooding Ceremony in August, during which 26 doctoral graduates were hooded.
Students met the requirements for their graduate degree.
As we look forward into 2026, the Graduate School will be prioritizing several goals, including, but not limited to:
The doctoral program in Engineering is an interdisciplinary degree offered in collaboration between the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) and the Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Science (CAS). Ph.D. in Engineering students will choose a concentration in one of the following areas: Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Robotics and Automation Engineering, or Engineering Physics.
The Ph.D. in Computer Science at Miami University is a collaborative program offered by the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering and the Department of Physics that prepares scholars to tackle society’s most pressing technological challenges—from cybersecurity and quantum technologies to AI-driven healthcare breakthroughs. This research-intensive program offers the time, mentorship, and scholarly depth needed to pursue transformative, high-impact work across emerging and interdisciplinary fields.
The program curriculum blends synchronous and asynchronous online coursework with an on-site pre-practicum skills component. Students gain relevant experience through practicums and internships, allowing them to utilize counseling skills and theories while receiving feedback from qualified supervisors. Practicum and internships are conducted in person with partner schools, hospitals, community clinics, and other settings, where the Counselor Education-Master of Education program has established and approved partnerships. This structure gives students access to high-quality preparation for a career in counseling.
Student organizations are a pivotal component of the Miami University educational experience. With over 300 on campus student organizations available ranging from social and service organizations to athletic clubs, opportunities for involvement are endless. Below are four campus-wide graduate student-specific associations on campus.
The Graduate Student Association is an academic, social, and governance organization that represents graduate students at Miami University. It sponsors a travel assistance fund, advocates for the interests and concerns of graduate students, and organizes several social events each year. An Associate Dean for the Graduate School is the advisor. The GSA selects student representatives to the University Senate, Graduate Council, and numerous campus-wide committees.
Graduate Student Pride Association (GSPA) is first and foremost a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ graduate and professional students at Miami University. Safe spaces cultivate a community for marginalized groups and are thus vital to LGBTQ+ graduate students. Furthermore, GSPA represents and gives voice to the concerns of LGBTQ+ graduate and professional students at Miami University.
The Graduate Students of Color Association (GSCA) is designed to enhance the campus life of graduate students of color by providing academic, cultural, political, and social support.
The International Graduate Student Association (IGSA) provides a community for international graduate students who are in the US for their advanced degree. This group also advocates for international students to university leaders and plans social events for graduate students.
The Graduate Student Development Series offers graduate students opportunities for personal and professional growth in one-hour sessions facilitated by Miami University faculty, staff, and/or invited guests. Students may attend in-person or virtually. One student received a "Commitment to Professional Development" recognition for attending five or more sessions in the Spring 2025 semester, while 5 students received this recognition for the Fall 2025 semester for attending 4 or more sessions.
Eight sessions were offered, with topics including:

The new graduate student orientation was held on Monday, Aug. 18 via Zoom. The goal of the orientation was to help new students learn more about graduate student resources and opportunities at Miami. It was an opportunity to meet the Graduate School staff, hear from the current student panel, receive the duty to report training required for Graduate Assistants (GAs/TAs), and have the opportunity to ask questions.
An optional in-person event was conducted to welcome all graduate students (including returning graduate students) on Aug. 22 in the Shriver Center Heritage Room. Light refreshments were served, there were opportunities for networking, and information was made available on various graduate student organizations and campus resources.
We are grateful to all of the donors who have supported various Graduate School initiatives in 2025 through financial donations, volunteering their time, and sharing their expertise.
We are creating new programs and certificates for graduate students that will prepare them with skills and training, including grant writing workshops, leadership certificates, 3 minute thesis groups, and more. Donations will help us to support endeavors for more students to gain skills that prepare them for industry. As students gain valuable experience in their programs, we also cultivate their transferable skills, leading to greater employment opportunities and professional success.
The purpose of the Graduate School Emergency Fund is to support the continued academic progress and well-being of students experiencing short term financial hardship who cannot be funded by other means.
Needs may include expenses such as travel relating to emergencies (e.g. death of a family member), replacement of stolen goods, emergency medical or dental expenses not covered by insurance, temporary housing due to displacement by fire or flood, and similar expenses. The Graduate School sees the availability of these funds as central to its mission of reducing barriers for students in completing their hard-earned degrees.
