More than 120 students and graduate school alums volunteered to be a part of this mentoring program.  This was the first event to bring these targeted populations together for the sharing of experiences.  The Graduate School invited diverse alumni to participate recognizing that their knowledge, experience and expertise can benefit our current students.  Students were excited to participate and meet alumni and faculty with experience navigating Miami University and beyond.  A student who attended the dinner stated, “It was great! I was able to meet other professionals at Miami and alumni who were very helpful in talking about their experiences at Miami and offered lots of advice on how to navigate the university.”

Connections Project

The following evening, alumni attended the 25th Annual Jazz Reception at the Marcum Center.  This event was created in 1990 by Associate Dean Emerita Dr. Judy McConnell Jackson as an informal opportunity for Black students to meet Black faculty and staff at the start of the academic year.  Dr. Cheryl Evans Apprey, upon her appointment as Associate Dean, expanded the event to include all graduate students of color, graduate directors, faculty, and senior administrators.  This event continues to grow and enrich the on-campus experiences of graduate students of color and international graduate students.
