Protected Classes

The OEEO investigates reports of harassment and discrimination based on protected class status. A protected class is a group of people who share common characteristics and are protected from harassment and discrimination.

Miami University's Policy Prohibiting Harassment and Discrimination Classes may in some respects exceed the requirements of applicable law. Classes that are protected under this policy include:

  • Age
  • Color
  • Disability
  • Gender identity or expression
  • Genetic information
  • Military status
  • National origin (ancestry)
  • Pregnancy
  • Race
  • Religion
  • Sex/gender
  • Status as a parent or foster parent
  • Sexual orientation
  • Protected veteran status

OEEO's Commitment

We are deeply committed to finding ways to effectively prevent, reduce and respond to discrimination and harassment, including sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence. Combating discrimination and harassment, including sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence, requires us to be both proactive and reactive.

By asking all employees to report, we will be able to respond more effectively when a member of our community experiences such misconduct. We will connect victim/survivors with appropriate professional support services and ensure that our practices address the reported misconduct in a manner that is respectful and fair to all involved.
