Top 5 tech reminders for the start of summer

Top 5 tech reminders for the start of summer

As we wind down the spring semester (where did the time go?) and prepare for the summer session, we know that faculty and staff are excited to exchange chilly breezes for warmer sunshine – and we’re happy to celebrate with you! We have a few reminders for you to take with you as we say goodbye to Spring 2025.

Let’s take a look at some of the key things to remember as we move into the summer session:

1. Have you looked through your Google Drive lately?

On Sept. 15, 2025, documents of university employees who left Miami longer than seven years ago will be deleted. These documents have a “Pending delete” tag in Google Drive to easily identify. If you are still working out of documents owned by someone long gone from the university, now is the time to reorganize your Drive.

Information and tips for moving files can be found in our news article.

Note: This does not apply to the documents of emeriti or retirees. However, it is good practice to make sure documents you use are owned by a current Miami employee, or, better yet, belong to a departmental Shared Drive.

2. Phishing scams are serious business

The last several weeks have been busy for our information security office. For the latest notices about phishing scams that are going around Miami, you can check out our phishing roundup article. The best advice we can give is to be vigilant when reading emails – especially if you’re not expecting a message.

3. Upcoming events: ShredFest, ShareFest, and Accessible Gaming Event

The week of May 12 is going to be a busy one for Miami! Not only is it exam week (and subsequent commencement), but IT Services and friends are hosting several don’t-miss events throughout the week.

ShredFest / ShareFest

Visit us in Middletown at the parking lot outside of Johnston Hall from 9 to 11 a.m. and in Hamilton at the parking lot outside Wilks Conference Center from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Then, we'll be in Oxford on Tuesday, May 13, from 12 to 4 p.m. Bring personal documents and small electronic waste. More details can be found on our website.

Note: Student instruction materials are generally not accepted at ShredFest. For more information, please visit MiamiOH.edu/ShredFest.

Accessible Gaming Event

The AccessMU Center is excited to announce an Accessible Gaming event on Thursday, May 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This event is open to all members of the Miami community and anyone interested in exploring accessible gaming. Participants will have the opportunity to explore and engage with various adaptive gaming technologies, strategies, and tools that promote inclusivity in gaming. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day!

More info can be found on the university events calendar.

4. Quick tip for the summer session: Save your tech from the heat

Extreme temperatures on either side of the gauge aren’t good for your devices. Heat can lower electrical resistance in the tiny components of your computer or phone, and the smallest change in current could be fatal to the machine. Overheating is also a real issue that occurs when components become too warm and shut down as a precautionary measure.

To avoid this, practice basic vigilance: Don’t leave your devices in a hot vehicle or in the sun as you’re sitting by the pool. You may also consider investing in a fan to cool your laptop.

5. Reminder: Visit MiamiOH.edu/ITstatus
