IAM Changes on the Horizon: Claim codes for all, removal of UniqueID Lookup tool

The Identity and Access Management practice at Miami continues to grow, helping us to shape how our systems interact with users and make quality-of-life changes for the organizations who support students, faculty, and staff alike.

Let’s take a look at some changes coming down the pike and what Miami faculty and staff need to know.

Change 1: Claim codes for all!

We are following the guideposts set by the recent revision of our IAM Forecast (which can be found at MiamiOH.edu/IAM). The first stop along the road is to implement claim codes for all. This is to say, the IAM Program is moving forward with the plan of implementing account claim codes for accepted students.

Beginning September 3, 2025, when a student is accepted, they will receive an email stating their username (UniqueID) and an eight-digit claim code that they can then use to claim their account at accounts.MiamiOH.edu. The rationale for this change includes the desire to bring us in line with industry standards and improve Miami’s security posture.

Change 2: Deprecation of the UniqueID Lookup Tool

This change has some downstream implications. One of these effects is that the UniqueID Lookup tool, long used by Miami offices to help give incoming students a self-service way to find their UniqueIDs, will be going away. This is due to the nature of the tool asking for the user’s password or default password – once claim codes are implemented across the board, default passwords will no longer be used in Miami systems.

Beginning Sept.3, in lieu of directing users to look up their UniqueID using this soon-to-be-defunct app, we ask that those folks who interact with students to please direct them to perform a self-service password reset if they have issues. They may also use this Knowledge Base article to help them determine their UniqueID.

Keep on keepin’ on

Once again, the Miami community is taking these changes in stride and helping us improve our security standards. Thank you for helping us keep Miami safe!!
