General know-how: Spot phishing scams
The semester is getting ready to start, which means it’s high time for the scammers to start bombarding new and returning students, as well as faculty and staff, with too-good-to-be-true phishing scams. Here are a couple questions to ask that will help you spot a scam:
- Does the email ask for urgency? Scammers are often trying to get you to react emotionally without taking the time to fully think something through. “Your account will be deactivated if you don’t respond right away” or “You need to jump at this opportunity right now” are common tactics.
- What does the link say when you hover over it with your cursor? Make sure links go to where they say they’re going—check the lower quadrant of your screen as you hover over links. (If you’re on mobile and unsure, wait til you have access to the email on a computer just to make sure!)
- Does the email ask for your username and password? Miami will never ask for your password. We will doubly never ask for your Duo code. If an email asks you to input a Duo code in a Google Form, that is a scam!
