Google Update: Sharing permissions in Google Drive
IT Services wanted to make sure the Miami community is aware of some recent changes to Google Drive sharing permissions, which have been enabled by Google on our domain. (More information can be found at the link in the previous sentence.)
In Google Drive, you may no longer restrict access to specific files within a shared folder. Files now inherit permissions from their parent folders, and any new folder you create will automatically pass on permissions to the files and subfolders within.
However, you may still limit access to folders and subfolders, which means that only people to whom you give access may open those folders. More can be found at the Google Support site.
Put another way: You cannot make a file more “restricted” or “private” than the folder it’s in. Use the “limited access” feature in Google Drive instead.
Please note: This is unrelated to the ongoing “Pending Delete” activities and should be treated as a separate, Google-deployed activity.
Planned maintenance: Windows 11 upgrade scheduled for Oct. 10 (faculty and staff only)
In preparation for Windows 10 to be end-of-life (EOL) later in October (Oct. 14), IT Services will be scheduling an update to any remaining compatible machines not currently running Windows 11 or Windows 10 LTSC. There are currently approximately 1,200 Miami-managed computers eligible for this upgrade.
What you need to do: On Friday, Oct. 10, starting at 10 p.m., any compatible Windows 10 computer will attempt to upgrade to Windows 11. Please leave your devices powered on (plugged in) and connected to a Miami network (this means that if you are remote, please connect to VPN) throughout the upgrade window.
Once again: Plug your computer into power (and connect to VPN if you are not on campus) and leave it on for the entire weekend starting Oct. 10. The upgrades will attempt to install during maintenance windows to minimize disruption, but starting Oct. 14, the upgrade will attempt outside of maintenance windows (potentially during the work day).
