Goodbye Filelocker: New tool to replace file sharing service available now
Filelocker, the program used at Miami for privately and securely transferring large files, is being sunsetted later this spring in favor of a newer, more secure application.
Read on to find out more!
What’s changing?
Filelocker is a service used to securely transfer large files between university departments. These kinds of documents often include personally identifiable information and other protected data, including Social Security numbers, Banner+ numbers, passwords, and more.
Unfortunately, the underlying technology that runs this program is out of date, meaning it would be more susceptible to security incidents—and when you’re sharing sensitive data, you want to make sure it’s safe.
Introducing: SecureFileShare
In order to improve security and upgrade the service to meet Miami’s needs, we have launched a new system for secure file sharing. It’s called . . . get this . . . SecureFileShare.
The system is available for use now, and it can be found at: https://securefileshare.miamioh.edu/.
Not only is the new system more secure and supportable, but it comes with a more modern look, as well. And while updating the user interface wasn’t our main reason for the upgrade, it’s a nice perk.
The Knowledge Base (MiamiOH.edu/KnowIT) has a useful repository of information about how to use the new tool and common issues you may encounter.
What now?
We know this transition will likely be marginally stressful as folks learn a new system and rewrite old habits. Therefore, teams will keep Filelocker running in tandem with SecureFileShare for a set period of time while we make the transition.
Our recommendation to you: begin using SecureFileShare now! Tell your friends and colleagues about it, and update any documentation you may be responsible for that mentions Filelocker.
Once more: On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Filelocker will be decommissioned and will no longer be available for use at Miami.
We are excited to have a more modern, scalable, secure solution for our file sharing needs. Please expect more reminders as we approach the decommission deadline.
