Summer reminder about tech tools

Summer provides us at the university with a different type of schedule. That includes fewer academic classes, especially in-person, but lots of visitors with Orientation, camps, etc. So, IT Services thought this might be a good time to remind you (or, in some cases, introduce you) to some underutilized technology tools that are available to our faculty, staff, and students.

Microsoft Office for personal use

Miami faculty, staff, and students have the ability to install Microsoft Office on up to five personal devices of each type: computer, tablet, and phone. As far as computers are concerned, there is a version for both Windows and macOS. The software is yours for as long as you are affiliated with Miami. To learn more and to download the software, go to MiamiOH.edu/GetOffice.

Read&Write

Read&Write is a free literacy software available for all Miami faculty, staff, and students. The toolbar contains many features that integrate with your daily programs, such as Word, Adobe Reader, internet browsers, and more. Some of the most common features include:

  • Text-to-Speech (Have documents and books in PDF/Word read out loud)
  • Digital Highlighting (Highlight notes in documents with multiple colors)
  • Speech Maker (Create an MP3 audio file from a document)
  • Word Prediction (Makes writing papers easier and faster)
  • Language Translator
  • Scan Hard Copy Documents to Word, PDF, or HTML files

For additional information about Read&Write, including training and how to install the software, please visit the Read&Write page on the AccessMU Center website.

eduroam

Developed for the international research and education community, eduroam (education roaming) is a secure network access service available in over 100 countries and territories. As a member of the Internet 2 community, Miami students, faculty, researchers, and staff who are visiting other participating institutions can obtain internet connectivity by simply selecting the eduroam network ID on their mobile devices or laptops. Then log in with your full Miami email address and MUnet password.

Before you travel, check to see if a nearby institution offers eduroam. The service is available at selected U.S. and international institutions, including some libraries and museums.

It is also a good idea to test and configure your connection through Miami’s eduroam network before you leave. For directions, see the knowledge base article Configure my device to use eduroam for Wi-Fi connection / Wireless Network.

SecureFileShare

SecureFileShare provides a secure way to share documents containing sensitive information with parties both inside and outside Miami. These kinds of documents often include personally identifiable information and other protected data, including Social Security numbers, Banner+ numbers, passwords, and more. Documents uploaded to this system will be deleted after 14 days, ensuring that private information isn’t sitting unprotected and forgotten after you are finished with it.

Check out the Knowledge Base for full information and instructions on how to share files with both internal and external people, or access the tool directly at securefileshare.MiamiOH.edu.
