New SMS scam: IT Services will never contact you via text
IT Services has received several reports about a new SMS-based phishing scam that seems to come from the IT Help support desk. (Hint: It’s not us!)
Here is an example:
![Hello [student name]. This is Brittany Reed from the Information Security and Operations team at Miami University @miamioh.edu - IT Help Center Could you please confirm if you have requested the termination of your current school email? Kindly reply with YES or NO. Failure to confirm means terminate to your account.](../_images/sms-phishing.png)
Do not respond to this text message. The IT Help support desk will never text you and will certainly never threaten to terminate your account in this manner. Several grammatical and syntactical mistakes in this message are also “tells” that it is a scam.
Remember: If you receive an email, text, or phone call that appears suspicious, it’s better to be safe than sorry - forward the message to InfoSec@MiamiOH.edu, and the Information Security team will tell you whether it’s legitimate or a fraud.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you receive a Duo push that you didn’t initiate, deny it. And: IT Services will never ask for your Duo code.
