Admitted Students

We hope you are excited to start your Miami journey. Living in a residence hall will help you transition to college life, meet friends, and succeed academically. Your hall will be more that just a place to sleep. You will have ample opportunities to attend community events, interact with a diverse body of residents, and take on leadership roles. We hope you will use the information below to become even more eager and informed about your upcoming move.

Residency Requirement

At Miami, we highly value the residential experience. All first-year and second-year students are required to live on campus unless they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Over 21 years of age;
  • Reside at permanent home with their parents or legal guardians (who had guardianship at time of admission), within commuting distance (50 miles) from the Oxford campus;
  • Reside with spouses or dependent children during the academic term and commute to campus; or
  • Have matriculated full-time, after high-school graduation, for at least two years at another institution of higher education or a regional campus.

Living Learning & Residential Communities

Incoming students are assigned to housing based on Living Learning Communities. Living Learning and Residential Communities give you the opportunity to live and learn alongside other students who share your interests. You’ll explore new ideas while creating friendships that last a lifetime. See the full list of Living Learning Communities.  You will be able to indicate your top three to five community preferences on your housing contract.

Complete Your Housing Contract

You will complete your housing and meal plan contract online at This is your opportunity to choose a meal plan, enter Living Learning Community preferences, and select other options for your first year on campus! This video shows newly admitted incoming first-year students for fall semester how to sign the Miami University housing contract electronically through the online housing portal.

Room Assignments

Room assignments are finalized during the summer. We strive to meet as many preferences and requests as possible. In order to meet the most preferences, our process takes the majority of the summer. Room assignment information for incoming students is sent out by email at the end of July.

Incoming students are assigned to traditional and standard residence halls on campus. Standard residence halls are either new construction or halls that have received complete building renovations, and include upgraded study spaces, kitchen, lounges, new student room furniture, completely updated building systems, new air conditioning and heating, and more. Traditional residence halls have not yet received complete renovations.   • Disability-Related Accommodations -  We work in collaboration with The Miller Center for Student Disability Services to provide reasonable accommodations in the residence hall setting.   • Gender Inclusive Housing - Students at Miami University are assigned roommates of the same legal sex (male students with male students and female students with female students). However, the University recognizes that assignments based on this gender binary may not be the best option for all students. In cooperation with the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, LGBTQ+ Initiatives, and the Campus Services Center, the Office of Residence Life offers gender inclusive housing. Each year, many students choose not to request a specific roommate. Instead, they are assigned a roommate based on mutual Residential and Living Learning Community interests. Other students choose to request a specific roommate. You will have the option to search for potential roommates when completing your online housing contract.

Our team will work to accommodate roommate requests to the best of our ability. Please remember that your requested roommate must select the same Community preference as you. Housing assignments are made without regard to race, creed, sexual orientation, religion, or national origin. Requests for specific roommates must be submitted no later than May 19 in order to allow time for processing of assignments.

Thinking about a triple or quad? If you are requesting a triple or quad room with specific roommates, please understand that we cannot guarantee that everyone will be assigned in the same room. The number of triple and quad room requests is typically greater than the number of available rooms. If we are not able to accommodate your roommate group in a triple or quad, you will be assigned into rooms near each other. For a triple room request we're not able to accommodate, one student will be placed with a random roommate.

Residence Hall Staff

The Residence Life staff includes full-time professionals, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

A Resident Assistant (R.A.) lives in each corridor of the residence halls to help new students make the transition from high school to college and to plan special events so students get to know one another. These carefully selected and trained upperclass students are also familiar with the scheduling process and often share their own knowledge and experience.

A Resident Director will live in your hall. The Resident Director is charged with shaping the environment and experiences of residential students.

Move In Information

Explore the Student Housing page of our site to learn more about what to bring with you to campus. We’ll communicate with more detailed move-in information as the time approaches. Your room assignment e-mail will include move-in information, including assigned move-in times. We have begun assigning move-in times in order to help create a smooth move-in process for students and parents. Assigned move-in times also assist with traffic flow in and out of Oxford.
