Selective Service Registration
The Ohio Revised Code mandates that Ohio students who are required to register with the U.S. Selective Service, but have not done so, are ineligible to receive in-state tuition at all Ohio public universities, including Miami University. Under this law, Miami is required to charge such students the non-resident tuition rate.
About Selective Service Registration
Nearly all male U.S. citizens are required to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Male immigrants who reside in the U.S., regardless of their documentation status, are also required to do so.
If you are 26 or older, you are no longer required to register with the Selective Service. In addition, a man is exempt from registration while he is on full-time active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. Lawfully admitted non-immigrant men are not required to register; this group includes those men on a valid student visa.
Visit the SSS.gov/Register to register. Complete information on who must register and who is exempted can be found on SSS.gov’s Who Needs to Register page.
Selective Service Registration and Ohio In-State Tuition
Even you are considered an Ohio resident, Miami is required by the Ohio Revised Code to assess the non-resident tuition rate to your student bill if you are required to register with the Selective Service and have not done so.
To maintain your Ohio-resident classification, Miami is required to obtain your Selective Service Registration Number. You may submit it by completing the One Stop’s Selective Service Registration Statement. This form will allow the One Stop to either look up your Selective Service Registration Number using the Social Security Number and Birthdate that you provide or allow you to provide the Selective Service Registration Number yourself.
If you are registered with the Selective Service but do not remember your registration number, you can obtain it at SSS.gov/Verify.
Students are expected to make full payment by their due date. Payment deadlines will not be waived or extended while you are waiting to receive your Selective Service Registration Number.
