Whether you’re exploring your first internship or preparing to launch your professional path, scheduling an appointment ensures you get personalized guidance to meet your goals and become career-ready from day one.

Handshake Quick Start Guide

Miami University Handshake

Step 1: Log In

  • Click “Sign in with your school account.”
  • Use your Miami University email and password.
  • Tip: Keep your login info handy for easy access anytime.

Step 2: Complete Your Profile

  • Add your education, experience, skills, and projects.
  • Upload a current resume and cover letter.
  • Tip: A complete profile helps employers find you faster!

Step 3: Search for Jobs and Internships

  • Use the Jobs tab.
  • Filter by location, type, or field of study.
  • Click “Save” on opportunities you want to track.
  • Tip: Check back often—new positions are posted daily!

Step 4: Apply for Opportunities

  • Review the job description carefully.
  • Upload your resume (and cover letter if requested).
  • Click “Apply” to submit your application directly.
  • Tip: Customize your resume and cover letter for each application to stand out.

Step 5: Schedule Career Appointments

  • Go to Career Center > Appointments.
  • Choose a service: resume review, interview prep, career planning, etc.
  • Select a date and time that works for you.
  • Appointments can be virtual through Handshake or in person on the Middletown or Hamilton campuses.
  • Tip: Book early — popular time slots fill quickly!

Step 6: Attend Career Fairs and Events

  • Explore the Events tab for career fairs, workshops, and info sessions.
  • RSVP directly in Handshake.
  • Tip: Prepare questions for employers — first impressions. matter!

Step 7: Connect and Network

  • Follow companies you’re interested in.
  • Message recruiters professionally or attend virtual sessions.
  • Tip: Networking can open doors to hidden opportunities!

Step 8: Stay Updated

  • Enable notifications for new jobs and upcoming events.
  • Update your profile and resume regularly with new experiences.
  • Tip: Consistency keeps you visible and competitive.
