Professional Editors

The Howe Center for Writing Excellence does not provide editing services. If you need to work with a professional editor, we have provided a list of local service providers below.

Graduate students who are considering use of these or any other editing services for course- or degree-related writing should first obtain permission from their professors. Failing to do so risks incurring a charge of academic dishonesty: see Section 4, “Academic and Research/Creative Activity Integrity,” in the Graduate School Handbook.

The Howe Center strongly recommends that you reach an agreement in advance with the editing service about costs. Editing services provide many kinds of assistance, ranging from proofreading to providing detailed editorial suggestions. Prices vary according to the service provided as well as the nature of your document and the speed with which you want the work completed.

To reach an agreement about costs, do the following:

  1. Provide the editing service with a copy of your document
  2. Describe the work you want done
  3. Indicate when you need to have the edited document returned
  4. Request a statement of the amount you would be charged

Prices can vary from one editing service to another. You may want to contact more than one.
