Undergraduate Summer Scholars (USS)

Program Overview

Summary of changes to the USS program, beginning 2025 as directed by the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI).

  1. Student Fellowship amount of $7000 - Consistent with a number of measures ORI has taken to work on ensuring equity, the fellowship amount for USS students will be increased to match that of NSF REU students;
  2. Project costs of up to $800 per award will be available and can be used for supplies, services, and travel in support of the USS project;
  3. 45 slots are available;
  4. Successful applicants may not enroll in classes or seek employment during the 10-week, full time program.

The Miami Integrated Learning Office facilitates the Undergraduate Summer Scholars Program. The USS program’s primary goals focus on student-centered learning through mentored research.

  • This 10-week summer program aligns with Miami's focus on offering “active, engaged educational experiences for our undergraduates.” 
  • Application is open to any Miami undergraduate student who: 
    • is in good standing (minimum 2.0 G.P.A., not on probation, etc.). 
    • has completed at least their first year (defined as minimum full-time status for each of two semesters) prior to the beginning of Summer term. 
    • will enroll for at least one semester at Miami University as an undergraduate student after the completion of the USS project and who agrees to full-time participation* in the USS program (*as defined by the administrative unit's department chair or program director). 
    • during the selected 10-week period of USS participation agrees: NOT to enroll in other courses OR accept any fellowships, internships, volunteer positions, or employment.
  • The individual student is responsible for finding an eligible Miami faculty mentor(s) to jointly create the research project and complete the USS application form.

Undergraduate Summer Scholars (USS) Program

The deadline to apply for USS is February 15, 2027. The application will be available mid-December, 2026.
