2.1 The College of Creative Arts
The College is comprised of 7 units: the Performing Arts Series, the Miami University Art Museum, and the Departments of Architecture and Interior Design, Art, ETBD, Music, and Theatre; the programs in Arts Management and Entrepreneurship also sits within the CCA. The CCA also houses several different minors and co-majors. All units carry out their respective functions as outlined in the Miami University Policy Library and the CCA Governance Document, as well as the Governance Document of each unit.
University Senate is the legislative body of the University in matters involving educational programs, requirements and standards, faculty welfare and student conduct. (See Regulations of The Board of Trustees of Miami University, Article VII.)
The CCA faculty exercises general authority and responsibility for the development of degree programs and courses within the CCA. Full-time faculty are comprised of tenure/tenure-track; teaching, clinical, professionally licensed (TCPL); and full-time visiting (VAP) faculty. Per University Policy, TCPL faculty may not exceed 25% of the total number of full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty within the CCA. The CCA legislative body—defined here as permanent full-time faculty and unclassified staff of the College of Creative Arts—has the authority and responsibility to maintain and amend this Governance Document. For amendment procedures see Section 3.6.
Unclassified Administrative Staff: The Office of the Dean and each unit in the College of Creative Arts include unclassified administrative staff. They provide specialized professional services in support of the educational mission of the College, for example, curatorial work, shop management, management of the Visual Resource Center, instrument repair, program marketing and audience development, and computer services. Classified Staff: The Office of the Dean and each unit in the College of Creative Arts also include classified staff who are part of the Supervisory, Administrative and Technical Support Staff (SATSS). They provide office management, accounting and clerical support for the CCA administration and faculty.
The administration of the CCA is carried out by the Dean, the CCA Executive Committee (Section 2.5), and the other committees of the College of Creative Arts.
The Dean oversees the operations of the units, assuring that each unit has a Governance Document that is consistent with CCA and University regulations and requirements.
The Dean and the other administrative officers of the CCA are expected to vigorously represent and promote the interests of the CCA.
As the chief academic officer of the College of Creative Arts, the Dean presides over CCA meetings. In the Dean's absence, the Associate Dean or a designate of the Dean presides.
Appointments to Divisional Committees are for the fall, winter, and spring terms unless otherwise stated.
2.5.1 The Executive Committee consists of the Dean, the Associate Dean, the Assistant Dean, the Department Chairs, the Director of the Art Museum, the Director of the Performing Arts Series, the Director of the Armstrong Institute, the Director of CCA Marketing and Communication for Academic Programs, the Director of CCA Planning and Analysis, and others as deemed appropriate by the Dean. The Dean chairs the meetings and establishes the agenda. Meetings, which are normally held at least once a month, serve an advisory as well as a briefing function for future activities and tasks.
2.5.2 The Promotion and Tenure Committee consists of two tenured faculty members from each department (excluding department chairs) selected in accordance with departmental procedures. The Promotion Committee consists of divisional full professors who sit on the CCA P and T Committee. For TCPL promotion cases, Associate or Full TCPL faculty may be added to the committee. The Dean chairs the Committee, which is advisory to the Dean as per MUPIM 7.8.C.
2.5.3 The Committee of Advisors consists of the CCA Academic Advisor, faculty members from each department/program, usually the Chief Departmental Advisor (CDA). The appointments are made on an annual basis in accordance with department procedure and recommended to the Dean by the Chairs/Director. The Assistant Dean is Chair of the Committee and is the representative of the CCA on the Inter-Divisional Committee of Advisors and the Undergraduate Academic Advising Council (UAAC).
The function of the Divisional Committee of Advisors is to oversee student advising across the division, share best practices, and act on undergraduate student petitions requesting exception to College of Creative Arts or University program requirements and/or academic regulations. Petitions requesting exception to the Global Miami Plan do not come under the jurisdiction of this Committee.
During the summer session or the winter term, should the need arise, an ad hoc committee will be appointed by the Dean, including the appointment of the chair.
2.5.4 The Divisional Academic Appeals Board consists of one member from each department in the College of Creative Arts. One member and one alternate are selected in accordance with department procedure. When the Board is convened, the Dean appoints one of the department representatives to chair the Board and another to be the vice-chair. The Board operates in accordance with the current version of the Student Handbook, Section 1.7.
2.5.5 The Dean’s Faculty/Staff Advisory Council consists of two faculty members from each department, one senior and one junior; one member from the Art Museum; one member from the Performing Arts Series; and one faculty member from IMS. The appointments are made in accordance with unit procedure and recommended to the Dean by the unit heads. To establish continuity, the term of appointment is two academic years and terms are staggered in each department so there is only one new department representative each year. Faculty may be reappointed to subsequent terms.
The committee assists in setting the direction of the College with regard to program balance and resource allocation. Additional topics for discussion are proposed by the Dean or any member of the Committee and published in advance with the meeting notification. Other issues may be discussed during meetings at the discretion of the Dean.
2.5.6 The Awards and Recognition Committee consists of one member from each department, one member from the Art Museum, one member from the Performing Arts Series, and one faculty member from IMS selected in accordance with unit procedure and recommended to the Dean by the unit heads. The Associate Dean chairs the committee. Committee members serve for one year with reappointment possible.
Awards and Recognition funds are intended to support teaching, creative research, and scholarship initiatives that are deemed likely to enhance the academic standing of the faculty and unclassified staff and, in turn, the unit and the College of Creative Arts.
A specific function of the Awards and Recognition Committee is to administer the CCA Scholarship and Teaching Grants. The Committee also reviews applications for the annual Crossan Hays Curry Distinguished Educator Award and makes recommendations to the Dean. Members for this review may also be drawn from the faculty at large as needed, and should include one previous Curry Award recipient when possible.
2.5.7 The Curriculum Committee consists of one faculty member from each academic department. Interdisciplinary programs (minors and co-majors) are represented by the Associate Dean who chairs this Committee. Additional Dean's staff may serve on this committee in a non-voting capacity. The appointments are made in accordance with department procedure, and the collective committee should include a balance of junior and senior faculty The Committee reviews and acts on all curriculum proposals submitted by the departments. The Committee will report its recommendations to the Dean for divisional action in accordance with procedures outlined in MUPIM, Section 11.1, Changes to the Academic Curriculum. Other teaching matters may be referred to the Committee by the Dean or divisional faculty.
2.5.8 The Committee for the Evaluation of Administrators is composed of one member from each unit selected following unit governance procedures. The term of service is four years with a new member selected each year to insure a rotating membership. The Assistant to the Dean chairs this committee. The function of the committee is to conduct evaluations of administrators as described in Section 5.4.
2.5.9 The Dean's Student Advisory Council serves in an advisory capacity to the Dean and consists of two students from each department and IMS, one graduate (if relevant) and one undergraduate. Five CCA Scholars shall also be selected to serve on the Council and shall be nominated by the CCA Academic Advisor. The students are selected on an annual basis by departments in accordance with department procedure and forwarded by the department chairs/directors to the Dean for approval. Appointments are made to ensure diversity of membership. The Council will meet once a month during the school year if possible.
The Dean's Student Advisory Council meets with the Assistant Dean, the CCA Academic Advisor, and with the Dean. Its function is to provide a forum for the discussion of student issues as they relate to the mission, programs, and policies of the CCA. Topics for discussion are proposed by the Assistant Dean, the Dean, or any member of the Council.
2.5.10 The Student Recruitment and Admissions Committee consists of at least one representative from each department selected in accordance with department procedure. The Assistant Dean chairs the committee.
The function of the committee is to monitor the overall admissions profile of the college.
2.5.11 The Assessment Committee consists of at least one representative from each department selected in accordance with department procedure. The Associate Dean chairs the committee and serves as CCA representative on the University Assessment Council. The function of the Assessment Committee is to provide an annual assessment of student learning objectives as required by Miami and the Higher Learning Commission and to coordinate this assessment with external program review.
2.5.12 The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is composed of 1-2 representatives from each unit (and Arts Management) and must include a mixture of faculty, staff, and students. The Dean will also invite a faculty/staff member outside the College to sit on this Committee. The Dean shall appoint a faculty or staff member as Chair of the Committee and appoint members in consultation with the Committee Chair, Department Chairs, and Directors. The function of this committee will be to implement the CCA’s Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
2.5.13 As necessary, ad hoc committees to facilitate the discharge of divisional responsibilities or to assist in the development of new programs or procedures within the Division are established by the Dean.
