Americans in Berlin Berlin has been one of the primary destinations for Americans artists, entertainers, authors , and enterpreneurs from 1920s to the present moment. Students will explore the various cultural, political, and economic dimentions of this long-lasting relationship, and will visit sites dedicated to the research and preservation of cultural memory. We will also study the role of the United States in Germany's and Berlin's unification, in the transition of the West German capital from Bonn to Berlin, and in the transformations that took place in the post-unification period. This workshop will explore these transformations through novels, films, historical accounts, museum presentations, archival materials, eye-witness accounts, public momuments, architecture tours and other visual and audio materials. Archives and Artifacts in London This interdisciplinary workshop introduces students to archival and humanities research over Winter Term at the British Library and other London archives including the London School of Economics and the Wellcome Collection. The scope of the British Library's collection includes everything from ancient artifacts to British colonial records to original recordings of the Beatles, making this workshop appropriate for students doing any sort of archival or humanities-based research. London is also home to several other of the world's biggest archives; students will have the chance to visit at least three. While this workshop is open to all students working on an independent research project, it may be most appealing for students engaged in honors projects, thesis projects, capstone projects, and/or Dean's Scholar Projects as they will be able to complete significant portions of their research while participating in this workshop. This workshop is taught with extensive research experiences, at the British Library and beyond, and it will be a mixture of class work and independent research. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with London-based Miami University alumni and other guest speakers. The New York Times recently named London the best city to visit on the planet. Belize: Healthcare Delivery in Central America This Miami University workshop (3 to 6 credit hours) will enable students interested in nursing and other health professions to work beside physicians and healthcare workers in Belize caring for residents in rural health clinics. The students will participate in village triage by assessing communities and residents for issues that affect health in the Central American country of Belize. Students will practice the Spanish language with the assistance of local interpreters. Residents identified as requiring medical assistance and education during community visits will be seen in the neighborhood clinic the following day. Students will participate in the assessment and care of those individuals at various levels based on prior experiences and knowledge. Students will also experience the culture of Belize along with the beautiful scenery through rich cultural tours and experiences. This is an experiential opportunity that will fulfill the Miami Plan Global Citizenship: Global Inquiry and Experiential Learning requirements and the required nursing major elective. Business & Spanish in Argentina The Program offers a unique cultural and language immersion experience for Spanish majors and minors over the course of 3 weeks in Argentina. The program provides students with an opportunity to live, experience and explore the culture, people and language in a safe and enriching academic setting abroad. The classroom is extended far beyond the confines of the physical space, as students are culturally integrated, through home-stays, into small town life in Argentina. Excursions and cultural events enhance student learning by allowing them to take a hands-on approach to their learning incorporating the knowledge and skills from the class to be applied in "real world", contextualized applications. The small rural setting of Colonial Almada, Córdoba works as catalysts for students’ language acquisition and cultural awareness, as rural towns do not have any English speakers. Computers and the Homeless in England Students will learn valuable IT skills incorporating Agile practices and teach a variety of skills to a multicultural population in Manchester, England. Classes will be held at the University of Manchester, and teaching sessions will be held at Justlife and other organizations working with the homeless. Housing will be in a university affiliated hotel. Evenings and weekends will include local sporting and cultural events and time to explore on your own. CSE 448 and CSE 449 (4 credits)
Flora of the Bahamas The goal of this course is to train you how to penetrate the green haze and gain an appreciation of the incredible diversity of plants that exist. In the course, you will not only learn to recognize common species and families of tropic plants, you will visit multiple habitat types, from Pine forests to Mangrove swamps to small Cays and learn methods for measuring that diversity. In addition, incorporate multiple activities and opportunities to learn more about the people and culture of the Bahamas. This program is particularly looking for students with an interest in biology, botany and/or environmental science; although, you don't need a background in botany to participate. BIO 295 (6 credits)
FSB in Asia: Asian Financial Markets Study international finance while traveling throughout Asia this winter term! You will start in Singapore with a walking tour, orientation and visiting various companies. Just don't chew gum! See Gum Control in Singapore.You will then travel to picturesque and vibrant Bangkok, Thailand where you will visit companies focused in this developing market. Finally, you will head to fast-paced Hong Kong to visit companies and experience life in one of the world’s most advanced and powerful economies. The program itinerary allows ample free time in each country to explore and immerse yourself in the local culture. FIN 417 (3 credits) and BUS 420 (3 credits)
FSB in Australia: Entrepreneurial Consulting Join us for an unforgettable winter term in Australia where breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, and real-world business insights come together for a one-of-a-kind study abroad experience. During this program, you’ll take Entrepreneurial Consulting while exploring three iconic Australian cities: Cairns, Melbourne, and Sydney. Along the way, you'll engage in company visits, hear from professional speakers, and have plenty of free time to immerse yourself in local culture. ESP 461 (3 credits) and BUS 420 (3 credits)
FSB in Italy: Management in the Mediterranean Step into the heart of Italy’s artistic and business world this winter as you study abroad in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. This makes Florence the hub of art, design, culture, politics, and economics. As the capital of Tuscany, Florence offers an inspiring blend of history, art, and modern business practices. Throughout this immersive program, you’ll study executive decision making and strategy, while experiencing the rich Italian culture that has shaped global creativity. FSB in Japan and Korea: Manufacturing and Logistics of Asia Embark on an unforgettable study abroad journey through Asia this winter term and gain global insights while exploring three dynamic cities: Tokyo, Seoul, and Osaka.In Seoul, where tradition meets cutting-edge technology, you'll experience firsthand how modern logistics, supply chain and manufacturing thrive in a fast-paced environment. Visit a variety of companies, explore bustling markets and skyscrapers, and take a day trip to the DMZ for a deeper understanding of the region’s historical and geopolitical context. Tokyo is a city renowned for its innovation, fashion, and global business influence. You'll take part in walking tours and company visits that offer a glimpse into one of the world’s most advanced economies. From the neon-lit streets of Shibuya to tranquil temples, Tokyo provides a fascinating lens into the intersection of culture, consumer behavior, international finance, and technology. Finally, explore Osaka with a guided tour of the city, seeing highlights such as the Osaka Castle, Floating Garden Observatory, and Dotonbori. MGT 295 (3 credits) and BUS 420 (3 credits)
FSB in London: Business Law and Information Systems With a rich heritage of property rights, global trade and being the world’s financial hub, London is the best venue for the exploration of the roots of the common law system and viewing innovations in modern business information technology. No trip to London would be complete without a tour of the Tower of London, the Royal Courts of Justice, and Parliament. Company visits and guest speakers round out our time. Each group will have a 2 night excursion to Paris. BLS 342 (3 credits) and BUS 420 (3 credits)

FSB in Spain: Management and Marketing Throughout the program, you’ll take part in company visits, cultural excursions, language classes, and enjoy ample free time to dive into Spanish life—complete with tapas, flamenco, and historic landmarks. Begin (or return to) your adventure in Seville, the soul of southern Spain. Kick off with a city tour, orientation, and a company visit. Discover architectural wonders like the Alcázar Palace and the Seville Cathedral. You’ll also get to experience the vibrant Three Kings holiday, a beloved Spanish celebration, and catch a traditional flamenco show in the city where it was born. In Granada, you’ll tour the iconic Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and participate in additional company visits focused on business practices in Southern Spain. The city’s winding cobbled streets and dramatic Moorish architecture make for an unforgettable cultural immersion. End (or begin) your program in the lively and cosmopolitan city of Barcelona. You’ll explore La Sagrada Família, tour the Camp Nou stadium, and visit the Barça Museum. Dive into local cuisine with a traditional tapas cooking class. This program allows ample free time for students to explore each city on their own so you could take a day trip to Montserrat, a breathtaking mountain monastery just outside the city or watch an FC Barcelona game.This program is your chance to experience Spain beyond the classroom—learning, living, and leading in one of the world’s most inspiring countries. Global Brazil: Economics & Culture from Bahia to Rio We'll explore this dynamic economy in its historical and cultural context, and will have extensive interactions with local students and families, faculty members, and entrepreneurs. Our locations in Rio and Bahia, and day trips from them, will expose us to an important part of Brazil's diverse environments and socioeconomic structures. Cultural activities include a samba school, capoeira and percussion workshops, participating in local festivals, and iconic tourist sites like Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, and Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. Global Literacy and Learning in Inclusive Classrooms and Communities in Belize In this immersive study abroad experience, you will explore effective, research-based literacy and student-centered practices while partnering with a local school district to provide meaningful reading and writing support for students in Preschool through fifth grade. Beyond coursework, you’ll engage in rich cultural experiences that foster a global perspective on education, equity, and inclusion. Discover how literacy connects communities, empowers learners, and transforms lives; all while living and learning in one of the most stunning settings in Central America. Integrating Spanish and Health in Costa Rica Integrating Spanish and Health provides an opportunity for students who want to build language skills, participate in experiential/service learning, explore global health care issues, and experience language / cultural immersion. Students will learn about the healthcare system in Costa Rica, visit a medical school, interact with medical professionals and interview patients, and learn about alternative treatments such as medicinal plants and natural healers. Students will have unique opportunities to gain hands-on experience and learn first-hand about the host country’s culture, history and geography while developing their Spanish proficiency. Students will complete online assignments and conversations prior to and after the work and class time in Costa Rica. Any students interested in the healthcare field will benefit greatly from this class and experience! SPN 333 and SPN 341 (6 credits)
Italy: Visions & Contrasts This study abroad program takes place in Florence (Italy) with a trip to Siena. The workshop offers a cultural immersion in food and art cultures through a combination of classroom work, small group collaborative projects, and experiential learning activities conducted on location, inside and outside the classroom. Through visiting museums, taking food classes and tours, analyzing Italian films, and writing about your own travel experience, you will develop your cultural knowledge of Italy and build skills in intercultural communication. Both courses (a travel writing class [ENG 310] and a cinema class [ITL/FST/IDS 262]) are in English; no knowledge of Italian required. ENG 310 and ITL 262 (6 credits)
Exploring Machu Picchu, Life at Altitude In this course, students will have the opportunity to explore the physiological realities and the culture of people living in Peru. This includes modern Peruvians as well as the Incas. Altitude has acute effects on human physiology but also influences culture because of available resources because of its effects on farming, livestock, and the surrounding environment. We will examine Incan culture as we visit various Inca ruins and holy sites. Students will also have the opportunity to investigate the cultural diversity of this country by exploring the Andes, Machu Picchu, and various religious and archaeological sites with a group of locals. Choose 1 of these courses -KNH 402 (3 Credits), KNH 487 (3 Credits), KNH 481 (3 Credits)
Life in Peru and Chile In this course, students will have the opportunity to explore the physiological realities and culture of people living in Peru. Altitude has acute effects on human physiology but also influences culture because of available resources because of its effects on farming, livestock, and the surrounding environment. We will examine Incan culture as we visit various Inca ruins and holy sites. Students will also have the opportunity to investigate the cultural diversity of this country by exploring the Andes, Machu Picchu, and various religious and archaeological sites with a group of locals. We will also visit Santiago, Chile, and walk around the contrasting neighborhoods and discover the sights and sounds of its bustling markets and temples, visit a local volcano, and the Laguna Negra. London Theatre Explore the exciting world of theatre and performance in London! By experiencing ten productions along with trips to cultural sites throughout the city, students will learn both about the London theatre & performance ecosystem and how to apply analytic techniques to make meaning of live performance and its impacts. Through workshops, lectures, and excursions, students will also gain an understanding of how London theatre operates as an industry and as an artistic enterprise. THE 398 (3 credits)
Paris: Cultural Capital (Honors Preferred Program) Make the Louvre your classroom; learn about the political philosophies that sparked the French Revolution at Versailles; and discover Hemingway’s Moveable Feast in the spaces that inspired authors of the Lost Generation. This three-week credit workshop focuses on Paris as a capital of transnational cultural and artistic production. Students study masterpieces of French and American literature and culture, from Medieval fables to experimental avant-gardes like Surrealism, to Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s site-specific performance at the Louvre. Through a combination of classroom work, small group collaborative projects, and experiential learning on location, history and art come alive with experiences inside and outside of the classroom. Readings and discussions provide contexts for understanding significant cultural events and artistic movements, such as what led authors and artists like Sartre, Monet, and Zola to become politically engaged, or how Gertrude Stein's modernist style inspired Picasso's painting. Our program facilitates understanding of the past and the present through sustained opportunities for reflecting upon intercultural contexts as you live and learn in the City of Light. January is a wonderful time to study in Paris when museums aren't crowded and we have the Orsay and Versailles practically to ourselves. Pura Vida: Education, Community, and Innovation in Costa Rica Immersing students in a different culture than their own has deep potential to be a transformative experience, particularly when the focus is on field experiences and the intersectionality of families, communities, education, and innovation. The design of this global education program is to expose students to communities, learn about various schooling practices, see how organizations are innovatively working alongside commities to solve social probloems, and engage with people from three different geographical Costa Rican areas: San Jose in the Central Valley, Monteverde in the mountains/cloud forest of Puntarenas Province, and Flamingo in the Pacific Ocean/coastal area of Guanacaste Province. Sport, Management and Culture in the Global Marketplace in New Zealand The Sport, Management, and Culture in the Global Marketplace study abroad program is designed for students who are interested in exploring relationship between sport, culture, and the contemporary global economy through an experiential learning environment. For the 15-day program, students will travel to four cities (Auckland, Dunedin, Queenstown, and Christchurch) to examine the structure, management, and marketing of sport in New Zealand culture and society. Accounting and the Tax Profession This course is a field experience that includes visits to Washington D.C. and New York City. Students will meet with policy makers, regulators and professionals that use financial accounting information to make capital market decisions. The course will address tax policy as well. Students will gain a better understanding of the critical aspects of developing financial reporting and tax policies and why policy and regulation are critical to the operation of the capital markets and government. CBL Emerging Leaders Consulting Experience A critical component of the Isaac & Oxley CBL is to reinforce and enhance its values by exposing students to actual business leaders across a diverse set of companies to see how they work with various stakeholders to achieve strategic objectives and create lasting value, and this program does so by placing students in the role of consultants working for one firm. The CBL Emerging Leaders Experience takes place in Chicago and will include a number of key organizations. ACC 490B/MGT 490B/ACC 590B (3 Credits)
Wall Street Week This is an experiential course to give students an opportunity to learn and practice equity analysis skills in a real-world setting. After completing this course students will be able to conduct equity analysis using appropriate methodology. In addition, students will be able to develop and give an effective presentation on the merits of a particular position to industry executives. Finally, students will be able to articulate whether or not they want to work for a Wall Street firm. FIN 320 (3 credits)
