Weekly Tech Update: January 12, 2026

Title II is coming: Are you ready?

Updates to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will go into effect April 24, 2026, and Miami is committed to making sure we are compliant with the new (albeit more strict) guidelines.

Read on for more information about how we are supporting faculty and staff as they make their online content more accessible for the whole Miami community.

Reminder: Network containment for Windows 10

Last week, IT Services began network containment of all Miami-managed computers that were still running Windows 10. This is the final step in our year-long campaign to upgrade these machines in advance of Windows 10 being end-of-life, which happened in October 2025.

Many of the computers that needed to be upgraded or to obtain extended support licenses did so over the end-of-year break, but there were still a few stragglers. If your Miami-managed computer is still on Windows 10 and can no longer connect to the internet, that could be why. Contact your local technology support personnel for more information and to upgrade to Windows 11!

Reminder: Orphaned account removal and RapidIdentity cleanup

The account cleanup work in OpenLDAP, Active Directory, and RapidIdentity (referenced in the Winter Break changes list) took place last week, meaning all the prep work for deleting orphaned entries is complete.

The final deletion is scheduled to occur Tuesday, Jan. 20. This change should be transparent, but as always, reach out to IT Help if you have questions.

Fun fact: The origin of the word "spam"

Do you know why we call unwanted soliciting emails "spam"? According to Merriam Webster, in fact, it came from a Monty Python sketch from the 1970's where the characters all chant about the canned meat product, SPAM.

Optional homework assignment in light of this fact: Next time you get a suspicious email, after you send it to InfoSec@MiamiOH.edu, celebrate by cooking yourself a nice crispy bit of spam!
