Communication Studies

The Communication Studies major combines a strong foundation in communication theory and practice with opportunities to explore specialized areas of interest. Through applied learning experiences, students develop career-ready skills in communication, critical thinking, leadership, technology, and professional development — preparing them to succeed in a wide range of careers.

English Studies

The English Studies major develops the critical thinking, creative problem-solving, writing, and communication skills that employers value across industries. Through the study of literature, language, and culture, students learn to analyze complex ideas, craft compelling messages, and adapt to diverse professional environments. 

Graduates are prepared for careers in writing, editing, publishing, media, marketing, research, and many other fields.

While these programs cannot be completed entirely at Miami University Regionals, students can complete many required courses close to home while benefiting from the flexibility, affordability, and personalized learning experience that Regionals provides.

Writing for Career-Readiness Minor

The Writing for Career-Readiness Minor equips students with career-ready writing skills that employers consistently identify as essential. Coursework focuses on communicating effectively, persuasively, and ethically. Students will write and design documents, reports, proposals, and digital communications that support collaboration and informed decision-making in career and technical settings.

Creative Writing Minor

Develop your creative voice while building skills in writing, storytelling, critical thinking, and communication. Coursework spans fiction, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, digital storytelling, and more, helping you bring ideas to life across multiple formats.

This minor is offered through the Department of English but can be completed at Miami Regionals.

Learning Outcomes

Communication Studies, B.A. in Applied Communication 

  • Engage in communication inquiry by gathering and analyzing information from a diverse set of sources.
  • Create clear messages appropriate to the audience, purpose, and context.
  • Analyze one’s own cultural identity and become aware of themselves as a cultural being in relation to others.
  • Summarize the broad nature of the communication discipline.
  • Accurately summarize and interpret data using appropriate data collection methods.
  • Students will construct well-reasoned arguments supported by evidence in their coursework.
  • Employ communication theories, perspectives, principles, and concepts.

Professional Studies (Liberal Studies), B.A. and B.S.

  • Identify authentic problems and use creative and critical thinking skills to evaluate various possible solutions;
  • Analyze information and ideas carefully and logically from multiple perspectives;
  • Collaborate with others to solve problems;
  • Communicate clearly for a diverse range of audiences and purposes;
  • Apply knowledge and methods from different cognate areas.

  • Analyze complex texts within their social, historical, and political contexts using the technique of close reading.
  • Demonstrate in writing their ability to evaluate, synthesize, and cite information and ideas from sources and modes of inquiry typically used in the discipline or in professions.
