During the 2022-2023 academic year, the ILRC witnessed a substantial footfall of approximately 9,151 student visits. The ILRC, along with its predecessor, the Language Laboratory, has been serving the academic community since 1956 and has amassed a total estimated student visit count of 1,139,214.
The Director of the ILRC was invited to present a lecture for Miami University's 3rd Annual Grandparents College. The lecture, titled "The Crazy Characters and Fantastic Letters That Make Up Our Languages," was held on July 13th and 15th, 2022, and was attended by approximately 75 alumni and their grandchildren. Many interesting and inquisitive questions were posed by the audience.
Throughout the 2022-2023 academic year, the Director of the ILRC has been engaged in various significant responsibilities. These include directing and guiding the Interactive Language Resource Center, assisting CAS-IT with faculty, staff, student, and classroom technology issues in Irvin Hall, and a one-third-time overload with assisting with administrative tasks in the language departments. The Director worked with two new administrative assistants, one in Spanish & Portuguese and one in FICS, with getting up to speed with various software systems and applications used at Miami. In March 2023, the administrative assistant in GRAMELAC had a medical emergency and went on long-term FLMA leave. Due to the unavailability of a temporary replacement to serve the GRAMELAC department, the Director and the two administrative assistants in Spanish & Portuguese and FICS have shared the GRAMELAC office administrator's duties until her return or retirement on medical leave.
In December 2022, Paula Fogt from CAS-IT delivered a presentation that the Director prepared and disseminated for her. The presentation highlighted what CAS-IT does for the university and was delivered to John Virden's Information Security Office group in IT Services and to other Academic Directors of Technology within the university. The presentation contained valuable research that has since been shared with the College Dean's Office and other areas in IT Services, specifically in the areas of computer age and inventory of computers in the College and the financials required to replace computers that have been designated "End of Life."
From January through February 2023, the Director collaborated with Ms. Polly Heinkel, the Web Communication Specialist for CAS within University Communications and Marketing, on the transition of language department web pages from the current template to the new university web template. The ILRC's website underwent a complete redesign and went live in March 2023. The Director will be working on transitioning the web pages for the Departments of Spanish and Portuguese, FICS, and the Havighurst Center over the summer.
The Director wishes to thank this year’s student assistants Michael Ferro, Allison McWilliams, Lina Miesse, and Erin Szucs for serving competently and for their contributions to making the ILRC a quality facility.
